So I've created a handline like what you did but I can't get the line to cast off.

I would think if you took a knife and scuffed it up, it would take a spark from a ferro rod. Great vid

This is a great idea, but I would've loved to have seen you demonstrate on how to use the fishing reel part of it. The fishing side of things just doesn't add up somehow? There doesn't seem to be any rod to hold on to (not long enough) and the end cap could easily come off whilst trying to fish with this thing. Your idea of using the cork as a float isn't a bad thought, but what if you got a snag and lost it, you'd have no cover to keep all your hooks etc in place? Also, you seem to have wound on the line whilst the coupling was attached (nice and neat), but how does one wind in the line and have the line lined up accurately, so that the coupling can be placed back onto the rod? Too many things just don't make any sense. I am going to make one of these, but will definitely change things up a bit. Thanks for your video.

If you go to a bike shop, they'll just give you dead tubes. No need to buy new tubes to cut them up.

I travel alone so i carry either a 10' x 10' nylon tarp or 6' x 8' poly tarp depending how heavy i'm going. Not very heavy these days. Im 72 and have heart problems as well as spinal stenosis. I recently bought a wee 5' x 7' nylon tarp for emergency kit. I may just carry it from niw on.

Perfect simple yet comprehensive tutorial. Not a single wasted minute. Answered my question about the type of steel required and you covered the importance of striking angle. No flat flint! 😄 Really deserves more views.

Looks fantastic! One suggestion for your next (replacement) canvas bag would be to use French seams: sew the seams on the outside, the flip it inside out and sew them again. This leaves your cut edges of fabric fully enclosed and less likely to fray or lose stringy bits in your bag. I will definitely be making one of these this week to go on my "Moiraine" style belt/holster/external pocket thing, which I also plan on making this week while camping 😆 Thanks again!

Reminds me of when made my mom a clay ashtray at school. You could use the same technique with smaller embers to dent the sides to made cigarette holders.

Super project for the upcoming rainy/typhoon season here in the Philippines where I am now located. I am envisioning a simple set of match cases for my young troops with their names and perhaps some small but meaningful symbols of our past adventures. Something they will keep handy, use occasionally, and remember "the old man."

I think it is all the chromium in the stainless steel that stops stainless steel from sparking interfering with the pyrophoric reaction.

I like scrimshaw stuff, I did 'some' back in the 70's just for fun. :) Really I just wanted to say that it's a shame that you don't make videos anymore, you really have a good personality for making videos, it doesn't matter what the topic, but you are a natural. Best of all, you don't (try to) come off as a great big hairy know-it-all Army Ranger that eats free-range babies for lunch to try and impress us. :) Machismo has its place, I guess, but it can sometimes get in the way of teaching/learning. (I recently just deleted a couple of channels that got to be too much) I really do understand how difficult it must be to have your own channel and coming up with new stuff all of the time, and most of all, trying to get and keep followers. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I, for one, really do appreciate your wit, skills, and being just a born teacher. I don't want any free money, I just wanted to tell you that! :) Thanks for what you did produce, maybe it'll inspires others to follow where you may have left off.

I get the memory issue with mono or any non braided. You need to tailor the line to where you will be. 50 lbs braid won't work in the majority of rivers in the Ozarks.
