How about an apples to apples comparison before claiming 12ga performance out of a 20ga. Going comparing a high end 20ga load setup with a mediocre 12ga isnt really an honest comparison.

You can do better than that go with a indian creek choke or a jebs choke with apex small town ammunition its lights out at 40 yards plus

Hope you have gravitated since this video. Long Beard XR #5, through a .650 choke, dropped turkeys for me over 60 yards. 64 being my longest, and went clear though the neck bones.

You should try the Federal TSS (Tungsten Super Shot) Heavyweight Turkey loads. Try the #9’s. The 7’s are great, but the 9’s are devastating. My fiancé’s turkey gun is a Remington 870 youth just like the one you have there, with the new Truglo Headbanger choke tube. I got 250 pellets in the 12” circle at 40 yards. Using the same Quaker boy targets you did. The old federal heavyweights are awesome but I think you’d really like the TSS loads.

Wow I'm very surprised in the lack of accuracy in the brenneke. At 50yards my gun shoots them in a 1in group at 50yards. They are basically all touching.

I would argue that there is no such thing as a superior load - only a superior combination of shell, choke and barrel.
@111broncofan
@111broncofan 6 жыл бұрын
Chuck honestly? I’ll agree that the choke and load combo play a key role in performance. Barrel length is extremely debatable as I will promise you that I will out preform most all 24” plus setups. Unfortunately, your excruciatingly over priced tungsten load is inferior to shot-lok lead loads. Don’t believe me? Perfectly fine. Google champion of the NWTF still target.

www.chuckhawks.com/compared_rifle_shotgun_recoil.html Shooting 3 or 3.5 inch turkey shells produces a recoil equivalent to rifles suitable for bear or African game, and there's a world of difference between patterning off a bench and shooting at game. Anyone who says that trying to manage 50+ ft. lbs. of recoil isn't a challenge shouldn't be giving advice.

Hey you probably already made your decision I know I'm super late to comment lol but actually the federal flight control wads in their turkey loads as well as tactical buckshot and also the ones used by Hornady in their heavy magnum turkey line are actually designed for more open chokes. This is so you can still get good downrange performance at 40+ yards with an improved or modified choke. An extra full choke often actually makes the pattern worse than a more open choke that these wads were designed for. So if you weren't satisfied with results from your X-Full, try your modified and I think you'll be thoroughly surprised! Good luck!

Do you have to field dress the bird before you breast it?
@MrCritterKiller
@MrCritterKiller 8 жыл бұрын
+Jdub No, you do not need to field dress it if you will be cleaning the bird shortly after killing it (say within an hour). If it's going to be a few hours or if the weather is hot, do field dress the bird.

Mossberg 510 mini turkey thug 20 gauge is a great shotgun. Nice mossy green design with turkey thug written on the side of the shotgun. Very compact for home defense too. You can maneuver very well inside a house with it. The down fall is that you can only have 4 shots including one in the chamber.

This is the only video I've found on the Remington 870 youth model for turkey hunting, I found the federal heavyweight #7 ammo but couldn't find the SST choke so I tried the truglo gobble stopper and only got 9 pellets in the head and neck area. Should I keep trying to find the SST or do u have another choke that works well with this gun?
@kykrazy6050
@kykrazy6050 9 жыл бұрын
RandyMay15 The choke u are looking for is made by Truglo and is called SSX which stands for strut stopper xtreme...go to truglos site and it will give u all the info u need. However ,if it were me i would contact Rob Roberts custom gunworks in Arkansas @ 870-251-9955 and talk to Rob or Jonathon and they can get u set up with the proper "non-ported,non-wad stripping " choke. The federal H.W uses the flite control wad which unlike traditional wads opens from the rear and uses the pressure to help do so....in short IMO i would just contact them and pick their brains.I have used them with great success with the federal HW in 12 ga for a while now. Any further information u may need feel free to hit me up ...HAPPY HUNTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only"weak point" in this load is that Federal refuses to use nickel plated shot,why this is,I don't know.I use the 2 3/4" inch golden pheasant by Fiocchi and it will out pattern Federals load by a mile in 20 gauge.

@MrCritterKiller
@MrCritterKiller 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Gram - sorry for the delayed reply. I have a TC Encore that shoots great. I also have an older TC Black Diamond that shoots great, too. I get best results with two pyrodex pellets (either standard 50 gr. or magnum) and a Barnes MZ-type bullet (250 - 300 gr. doesn't matter). Consistently 3-4" patterns at 100 yards, puts golf-ball size exit holes on deer, more than enough whomp for an elk. Chuck out Chuck Hawks website: www.chuckhawks.com/index2h.muzzleloader.htm

just to answer a cpl questions yes yu can buy a full size stock and it will be just like a "normal" 20 guage also sure a 12 yr old can use it my son got his when he was 9 or 10 ----next slug barrels are plentiful you can buy them anywhere even ebay keep in mind Remington made 2 different frame size 20 gauges one was based on a 12 guage [early models ] and then they now make them on their own frame so you need to find the correct barrel now as for recoil in my opinion that little thing kicks a lot I know it kicks a bunch more than my 12 guage 11-87 with comparable loads so if you are worried about recoil ,get an automatic they kick a bunch less

I've got a single shot 20 gauge fixed modified .500 choke 24 inch barrell... is it realistic to use it as a turkey gun Why or why not? Shell suggestions? Will chamber 3" &2 3/4
@MrCritterKiller
@MrCritterKiller 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Calvin - sorry for the much delayed reply. Any gun is realistic to use as a turkey gun as long as you know it's effective range. One of the kids in my learn-to-hunt turkey class dropped a big tom with a .410 ... at about 12 yards. Anyway, I swear by the Federal Premium Heavyweight #7s for my 20 gauge, but your gun may like something different.
