I ended going with the Kowa. I have the 88A as well. Oh my is the 55A a phenomenal lightweight spotter! Excellent glass! I am super happy with this purchase! Only three way it could be improved in my opinion: 1) is if the fine adjustment knob was was even “finer”. Say twice as fine….. 2) the mount was ARCA. 3) the body could rotate in relation to the mount like on bigger spotters. 2 and 3 are easily overcome as is…. But I would still love a finer adjustment gearing….. Regardless, this is the best spotter I have ever seen.

As for the bottoms, which would provide more warmth: the 330 or the Heavy weight base layer?

Brady, is there a particular brand of binocular adapter that you would recommend for the Tricer-LP? I don't know if it makes a difference but I own a pair of Leupold BX-5 Santiam HD 12X50 binoculars.

I like the Tricer option, it's not perfect but it's lightweight and affordable. Outdoorsman's makes one as well, aside from those two I don't have experience with one that I really liked however I have not done a ton of research on them recently. -Brady

I've never hunted, and want to start. I watched this one, and your EXO review. The EXO didn't make the cut into this vid I see, how should I be framing my thinking about buying a hunting backpack (I'm at knowledge base zero, and want to hunt elk/deer). Thanks!
@gearfool
@gearfool 8 күн бұрын
Great question. Exo was included in our previous review, and not in this one due to the similarities between it and the Stone Glacier frame. If you're going to start hunting big game, I'd recommend focusing on getting a good pack, and a good pair of boots. Aside from weapon, all other equipment can be substituted at first. If you want to give us a call we can help you with product selection. Reach out to us at gearfool.com

Commenting on an older video so apologies; with a windbreaker would you say the Ambient is warmer than the Cirque Lite? It does have a higher listed Insulation rating 100/60.
@gearfool
@gearfool 8 күн бұрын
You're good! I'd say the Cirque lite will be a slightly better windbreaker than the ambient, but the ambient will be a bit warmer in non-windy conditions depending on which weight you choose.

Good day. Great review. I’m busy adding to my existing items and been looking at the Merino options in Open Country. On the Sitka website the Merino options in Open County seem to have a different colour to other material options. Maybe just the way the images are taken? Or is there an actual colour difference. Many thanks.
@gearfool
@gearfool 8 күн бұрын
Merino is a difficult material to print patterns on. There will be a noticeable difference between a merino in open country and a polyester in open country. However, the armor spun material does better than most merino with camo due to the Nylon. Go to gearfool.com next time you need some gear if you want to support us!

Love these videos. Watched last years as well. I’ve not pulled the cord on a solid hunting pack as of yet, there just has been something lacking in many of them, particularly in the most important area, the waist belt. To me, that belt must be adjustable under a load and as terrain changes. The best pack I’ve found so far has been my Big Agnes pack. It’s made for back packing and multi day trips. The support is just plain solid and the waist adjustment actually adjust around the bottom and top of your pelvic crests with one simple pull down and forward. Drawback, meat goes inside. I’ve been looking for a solid replacement with meat carrying capabilities combined with true back country back packing capability. This video goes a long way to discussing that. Would love to see a bit more detail on those types of on the fly adjustments to the packs you try, and how they work. Keep up the work gents and thank you.
@gearfool
@gearfool 7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment! All of these packs allow you to adjust the waist belt under tension, and I also do that often, even if I'm simply shifting weight to my shoulders for a mile, then back to my hips. That being said, I have not tried the Big Agnes pack. The Stone Glacier has straps on top and bottom of the hip belt but honestly I haven't found much use in adjusting those more than once. 4:27 none of this is accurate to what I’m seeing. I wanted the viper to be better but it’s just not. The Razor has a far better detailed picture here.
@gearfool
@gearfool 7 күн бұрын
At 4:40 I mention that the razor's image is easier to interpret due to higher contrast, however a lot of these detailed observations will vary based on each person's eyesight as well. I think overall the Razor is still better than the Viper, but for the cost, the Viper is a better value. Go to gearfool.com next time you need some gear if you want to support us!

Great info except for this. You are mixing up exit pupil and the eyepiece field of view. EP is the diameter of the light exiting from the eyepiece, you can step back and see it and even measure it with a caliper. What you are showing is the field of view which is related but is set by the eyepiece field stop diameter and related to the eyepiece design. EP is objective diameter divided by magnification. FOV is how wide an angle you see looking through the eyepiece. Lower price point scopes use narrower FOV eyepieces and higher price point wider FOV due to the cost of adding more lenses and more complicated and expensive lenses to achieve a wider FOV with low distortion.

Unfortunately the strapless option does not work will all of their boots. Look for the small tabs above the heel when purchasing to make sure they will work. However, they do come with a regular center strap that will work with any boot.

When I figured out how they wanted you to wear it, close to the body with nothing other than a base layer under it the thing really shines and replaced my fleece. Sitka actually recommends in all of their videos to wear an ambient over not under the mountain evo. You can watch their videos for better explanation on why.

is it possible that the Razor tends to display warmer color-temperature? Personally I like the image of the Viper much better and it feels more natural to me.
@gearfool
@gearfool 7 күн бұрын
It will look different for everyone's eye but in general, I think you may be right. They put different coatings on the lenses of the razor and that affects the color hue, I'm not entirely sure why the Razor looks so much different though. What do you think about the AI with the load carrier, to carry 65 pounds of weight either on a sandbag or with steel plates?. What worries me most is the slippage of the hipbelt under load and for several miles. The shoulder straps dig into your body if that happens.
@gearfool
@gearfool 7 күн бұрын
I think it would be a great option. The AI has the stiffest frame of all these packs and that will be key when carrying sand or steel. We didn't notice any slippage of the hip belt. Go to gearfool.com next time you need some gear if you want to support us!

I think the diamondback darkens the “colored” portions of the image, so against a white snowy background, the contrast is better than the Vortex. That one image threw me off hard, but there’s no snow over here, so Viper fits my budget and works for me. Amazing review, thank you.
