I don’t know why the publisher posted that graphic that the race was one if last races for the ama championship in CA. it was the ‘74 ama fall trans am event at saddleback. there were many more national and international championship contests staged in California up to and including the current era..

I live in the U.S., saw Joel for the first time in 1967 at Pepperell, Ma along with the CZ team mates as well as the Swedish crew on Husqvarnas. I rode the support 250 class and got to spectate the 500cc class. It was an awesome awakening but in particular seeing how Joel fit the machine and seemed built for the sport. Saw him again two more times and I concluded I'd never seen the marriage of a man and a motorcycle as amazing as Joel. Loved the other competitors too, particularly Bickers and DeCoster but can't leave out the other Europeans who scorched the tracks showing such magnificent form.

The Greeves reminded me of the Sachs 125 I had with "Leading link" front suspension. I did pretty good on it but shifting that thing was chancy at best, always missing gears.

Back in 74, I hadda brand new 250 Elsinore, and witnessed through hugh suspension breakthus in 75-80, it becoming obsolete. Presently, my 97 RM125 has wondrous suspension by comparison, but I gotta say radiators on dirt bikes was/is a price raising crock of shit. Thank you.

Hallo Jamie B. That´s not right. It was a policeman, Titel "Hauptkommissar" (chief-inspector?), at this time the police-chief of the city of Brühl and made his job for the town-government. At later races there was the major of Brühl giving the gratulation to the winners. I think, at the first race, the major had his breakfast - lol ;-)

This Trans AMA race was located outside the city of Livermore, California at the Carnegie Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Park. The year was 1974 and Roger DeCoster won the event and Willie Bauer (Maico) was second. The Trans-AMA races ran at this facility in the fall for several years. I was at the 1975 Tran AMA race at Carnegie and saw Roger DeCoster crash over a high speed jump when his bike broke in half after landing. He was flown out in a helicopter to a local hospital and he suffered a facial injury. That was the last time DeCoster wore an open face helmet. He returned to racing wearing a Bell Moto Star full coverage helmet and that was the beginning of the trend of motocross racers wearing full coverage helmets.

I remember watching Roger D racing at the Puyallup Trans Am, it was real muddy, he wore a pair of hickory coveralls. The next race at puyallup for the locals, half of use wore coveralls. We idolized the guy.

Well defined classes, no displacement handicap, lots of horse power, lighter weight, challenging but actually fun to ride? Without the suspension advances pioneered on two-strokes along with the advent of liquid cooling, also pioneered on OW series Yamaha, four strokes would still be at the back of the pack. The Honda Xl's and CCM four strokes of the era had the same limitations as two strokes, and were absolute bricks.

This guy wasn't just a 500cc world champ, ISDE gold medalist or the man behind Can-Ams U.S. national motocross and enduro championships. He simply remained revelant in off road motorcycling as long as anyone, ever. What a career this man has had!
