Ever calm, never flustered, quietly playing his guitar, Richard the invincible

Sam loved drums, loved talking about the drums and wrote dozens of books on drums, or more accurately, wrote a similar book dozens of times. And he was a bit of a kook. I liked "Chopbuilders" because it was mindless exercises that did indeed help build chops. That's what Sam was all about . He advocating practicing with metal stick to build strength and endurance. Drumming was a physical effort to him. And there's a place for that. But it's just a tiny part of being a creative musical player.

Sweet Steve! I have one coming in next week! So looking forward to gigging with it. I wonder if we ever passed each other at Vic Zinn's in N-ville back in the early to mid 70's. I lived on the southside (Southport High grad, '74), but went up north to IRC, and Vic's place. I'm a big fan, man. Long may you run, and long may that Guitar do the talkin'!

Agreed chops are there but more borrowing from the melodic drummers of the past like max roach. Less fusiony muscle chops

Sam was one of the greats. I studied with him for 16 years. He taught me more about drumming than all my other teachers combined. I didn't agree with everything he said and sometimes we argued like "cat and dog" (his words), but right or wrong, he thought more deeply about the drums and their relationship to music than anyone else I ever met. I miss him a lot! RIP.
