It’s mind blowing to me some people can be picking red and black belt locks within two or four months of starting lock picking. I mean that’s just insane. You not only have to be insane talented but have insane drive to master something that fast.

It’s very rare to find a video like you just made here where the person discribes ever my little detail of what you are doing which makes you an amazing teachers. Not many people are good teachers at all. Some of the most popular creators in locksport aren’t. This video is definitely a must watch for new pickers. I’ve watched over 25 how to pick videos and this is far superior to the rest. I mean you mentioned everything. You left nothing out. You even had the empathy and mind to use your first pick set to show new pickers you don’t need high end picks what they have is fine and makes them feel like they don’t have to buy expensive stuff. I notice a lot of pickers especially in other countries use very low end picks because they don’t have the access or money to get decent ones where they are so this is very valuable to them. Even most new people in the US get the cheap ones off amazon like I did awhile ago. They are not bad to start with as they come with three different see through locks.

To my understanding as a non-lockpicker this lock seems to a very good purchase for securing a home, is that correct? Considering the first time it took you a long time to pick and I am probably not looking at a pro lockpicker coming to break open my door :D

Dang, this stuff is hard. I can only speak about gin spools here in their matched counter milling. I find it very hard to find the binders and set them. You need to be very precise with your tensioning and pick manouver. I find using a deep hook and moving from side to side or forwards and backwards on the keypin as you very carefully manually counter rotate, seem to set the gins reliably. Now, i just need to figure out how to figure out the binding order and detect the binders.

I appreciate showing the different techniques and tips. I want to try picking my first lever lock with stuff around the house today.

18:50 You could improve that log with a small file. Just grind the false gate wider but no deeper and the lock is instantly much harder to pick.

DD lock picking in nutshell: 1. apply tension 2. test every disk until you find a binding disc 3. rotate the binding disk until it's no longer binding (probably requires reducing tension while you're rotating the disk) 4. go to step 1 Keep doing this until the lock is open. It's not possible for the mechanical DD lock to be safe against this attack. Poorly executed false gates like in this video simply allow skipping tests but even correctly made false gates cannot prevent picking, just require more loops. Potential problems: 1. Lock tolerances are good enough that you cannot identify any binding disk. Solution: apply more tension. 2. Lock mechanism messes up with the disks when you release the tension to rotate a disk. Solution: re-dial all disks starting from the fully locked position and keep track of disk positions that are known to be incorrect (binding detected). Yes, it gets very tedious fast but you'll get the lock open. 3. You cannot fit a tool to check the disks while you're applying tension. This is the protection in modern Abloy locks: make the keyway so small that it's hard to fit pick with the tensioner tool at the same time which makes feeling the disks really hard while tension is applied. Solution: see example picks that have been found working, for example see videos by idanhurja.

The crazy shaped tensioner looks like it is for when you have a too close door jamb and need to be horizontal but no room.

Man, i want my blue belt, but this seems like a large project, especially if you want to make something that's somewhat decent.

I wonder if it is possible to make pyramids or trampoline pins using this method.

Alright, so instead of making a key for a pinned up lock, you make the key first and then you select the pins that fit the key.

4 years on time! 😁 I have an American 7400 (7200?) series with tubular cylinder. I got it picked, but it seized up on the next pin stack. I could imagine that I just AFU'd my lock. As I was watching this video, I was wondering about shaving the nub off of a key. Then you said exactly the exact same thing! Also, I don't think I've damaged my lock after all. You have given me hope. Thanks

I've bought used Master and cheap Chinese locks on Ebay expecting things to go a certain way: "bind>tension>click>core turn". This sequence is seen on ALL picking videos. Being an in-training white belt I've found most used locks don't behave this way. Thngs are more vague than 'crisp clicks'. The core doesn't always turn after a very slight feeling of a thump rather than a click. The thump isn't even audible for a microphone. I think the videos give an unreal expectation to the beginner. All my locks have been cleaned and oiled so that's not the problem. Used locks exhibit wear and tear that affects picking. I think not having the "bind>click>core turn" probably discourages beginners so I wish you educators would show more of the real world lockpicking on video.

This lock would be great if it was robust.

You probably get asked this all the time but what would you recommend as a deadbolt that's extremely hard to lockpick? I just renovated a million-dollar home and I want the most secure deadbolt I can install

That first one was awesome. My 10 year old and 8 year old really took to picking too!

I make 5 pins in each stack for suites. Operating for the individule door, mastered for the suite, gand mastered for the building and the control key.
