Mary was such a stuck up, mean spirited cow. Edith was vindictive at first, but unlike Mary, she grew out of it far more quickly. It6 sad how Mary wasted soany goid years shd and Mathew could have spent together with her calculated vaccillating.

Why would they push that old hog on such a young and beautiful woman?? I'm happy that feminism has started to push against such unnatural and undesirable relationships. Young women should be with young men. Period.

I thought Mary unsympathetic and self indulgent (if practical). Edith dim and spiteful (but corrigeable). Sybil charming and engaging (if naive). I thought Matthew to have more insight, be more aware of wider options and despite a sense of obligation, alive to the trap of a loveless marriage. This narrative arc was slightly artificial, but understandably had to be developed, as so complimentary to the main focus.
