Our 9 y.o. Coonhound "Mabel” just had her second TPLO surgery. She got the first one a year ago. She’s on day five of recovery on the second. I wish we didn’t have to do this, but we really had no other alternative. We didn’t want her to be in pain the rest of her life. The recovery process has been very difficult and painful for her but IMO, worth it in the long run. I’m looking forward to long walks and romps through the woods once she recovers.

My son's Rottwieller is nearly 5 weeks post op double TPLO surgery. The first week was tough going managing her pain, refusal of food due to pain and probably feeling off from all the drugs she was on. I slept on the lounge close to her and she would cry during the night. Things turned the corner at about day 8 and by day 10 we longer had to use the towel to keep her for weight baring on those back legs, and she started to eat again! At week 5, she has more skip in her step but still not walking normally and still hand standing a little however with time and increasing exercise she should build more strength. She likes to swim and on one hot day last week we popped her in the pool. Our vet said the pool will help her alot but again not to over do it.

Good call on the Greenies - I should have mentioned those! I actually didn’t know they had dental food out there, that’s great. I’ve been lucky so far that Remy hasn’t had any dental issues but that might change as he gets older. Hopefully not 🤞

They ran straight past us, but took us totally by surprise, my dog, who's an improving rescue bag of nerves, jumped sideways, and a car was coming. Thank goodness there were speed bumps, or he'd have been hit. It's so hard after that not to join in with the hyper vigillance. I must be getting better though, because i didn't cry!

Usually when a dog will take treats inside but will NOT outside, it’s because the environment is too stimulating. Try practicing in a back yard, driveway, or front sidewalk that will be familiar for your dog and not too over stimulating.

You can't know how much watching this video has helped us make a decision about Crucial ligament surgery for our little Shizuh. A friend had this surgery done a couple of years ago and the metal screws from the operation started to push through her skin and showed on the outside. They took her back in removed plate and screws which lifted the pain visibly for her. Unfortunately 3 weeks later, for no apparent reason the dog dropped dead in the kitchen. As you can imagine this has scared us half to death ! We visited our vet here in the uk and got the diagnosis and he said an operation to reverse a bit of bone and plate and screw in place to stabilise the stiffle (knee) and also that more often than not the second knee would often fail needing a further operation. I have lost sleep over just not knowing what to do, so you can begin to understand how you have helped us make a decision to undertake the surgery. many many thanks and kisses to Remy for the help he has given, bless you both x

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: your relationship with Remy is truly an example to follow. The way you see him as a sentient, fully alive being is incredible and always moves me. You’re an amazing caregiver-one that many dogs would envy. I strive to teach dog owners to work WITH and FOR their dog, recognizing them as individuals who live with us because WE chose that, not the other way around. Dogs have their own needs, feelings, and unique learning histories. They aren’t our property, expected to behave exactly as we wish; instead, we are their caregivers, and it’s our responsibility to make their lives easier and happier. And that’s exactly what you do, even when it makes your life harder. Your commitment to Remy shows what it means to truly care for a dog, and it’s something any dog would be lucky to have.
@K9ofMineАй бұрын

Awesome cideo, well explained and very helpful. I've been trying this for 2 days. Can a positive interrupter be used to break focus like puppuppup or a sound they have connected with a treat?
@K9ofMineАй бұрын
Thanks for the comment! That’s a great question. I would personally say yes, but it is a bit of a controversial point. I was originally taught to use a clicker as positive interrupter for reactivity (primarily when the dog hasn’t gone over threshold yet but is staring and fixated). Of course when I first posted me doing that, some people claimed I was reinforcing the dog’s reactivity so I stopped doing that and would just use a focus cue instead since at that time I wasn’t confident in my skills and understanding of reactivity. But, the more I’ve since learned about reactivity, I do not think it’s very likely that you’re going to reinforce reactivity - or that you even could. The dog isn’t performing a behavior in expectations of a reward - it’s an emotional response to the trigger. So any positive association you can build with the trigger makes sense in my book.

Thank you so much! What a great video. We are 4 months in with our reactive rescue, and while making progress, some very negative emotions can creep in. So nice to seem them acknowledged, but also advice/encouragement for how to get past them. Our girl has the funniest stiff legged run when playing in the back yard, always makes me smile. Something to remember when I'm stressed and hyper vigilant on our walks! And I love the term 'spicy'. So fitting. What a great channel.
@K9ofMineАй бұрын
Absolutely! I know how isolating having a reactive dog can feel - especially those first months so you’re definitely in the thick of it! Yes some dark feelings can manifest and it’s hard to deal with. At my worst time with Remy I honestly felt as if I hated him, felt terrible for feeling that way, and questioned if I ever even liked dogs after all, despite being obsessed with them since childhood haha. Your pup sounds really lucky that she landed in your home. Thank you so much for giving her a chance and the help she desperately needs!

@@K9ofMine Exactly! I volunteer at the shelter we got her from, as a dog walker. I found myself just so tired of all dogs. The other volunteers would be all ‘isn’t this dog just the best!’ And I’d had to keep the ‘no, all dogs kind of suck’ that I thought to myself. Videos like yours give practical advice, real world experience (I howled at the guy who wouldn’t move! Been there!! Days where it seems there are just dogs with oblivious owners everywhere!), validation and encouragement. They are invaluable. And just the right amount of info, some training sessions can be overwhelming. Really, my dog and I owe you (and our trainer and the behaviour team at the shelter we got her from) a huge debt. 🙏🙏

By the way, my dogs having TPLO surgery on Tuesday, 17 September 2024 and I was on KZbin and I found something called the “ lick sleeve “. It’s made in Austin, Texas. I bought one my dogs been wearing it. It’s instead of the E collar because they can’t lick and they can’t do anything and it’s about an $80 purchase. I just bought a second one because we might have to have surgery on the other leg now before the surgery even happened. We’re not sure but look up licks sleeve. It’s another way of not having your dog wear an E collar. It’s pretty amazing cause my dog scared to death of umbrellas, outdoor umbrellas, patio furniture umbrellas so putting a cone on her head was going to be no way. So anyways thanks for everybody’s opinions and suggestions and helpful hints. God bless all of you and your dogs.
@LauraJSelby2 ай бұрын
@@to5msheppard we bought one and the surgeon sent her home in it, along with a perfectly sized and fitted cone. Once we realized that our girl was not fighting the cone (as she had in the past, due to mis-fitted, too large a cone), we took the sleeve off. We were able to monitor the wound much better that way. But I think it was a great product, just didn’t need it. Good luck with your dog’s recovery!
