I have a reactive miniature poodle dog. He is 3 years old and not neutered. He is very smart and adaptable. However, when guests come to the house, he barks a lot, or when someone leaves the room, he jumps on them, sticks to their clothes, and tries to stop them. He only does this when I am in the room. Besides, he does not act like this towards other people or dogs on the street. I have done a lot of reading and watched videos. What most of them suggest seems to be punishment-focused, correcting with a leash seemed a bit logical, but it didn't work for us, he became even more stressed. I try to attract his attention with a reward as soon as he does this behavior, but he doesn't focus on me. Normally, he always looks into my eyes. How can I solve this problem?😢
@K9ofMine
@K9ofMine 2 күн бұрын
That does sound frustrating! I think it was smart to not continue with the punishment route, as it often does increase stress and if your pup is uncomfortable with guests there, adding more fear and stress will only exacerbate his discomfort. It’s hard to say for sure what is going on - it could be that he is resource guarding you, but if they are leaving the room and he does this, resource guarding doesn’t really make sense. It could be that he is struggling with general arousal and excitement, and it just struggling to remain calm. It sounds like the motion he is making could be humping, which is often related to stress/excitement. There are a few things you could try. First, you could consider giving him a frozen food item or puzzle when guests come over. This is what I do with my own dog who has stranger danger - I just hand him a frozen KONG or licking mat and it allows him to remain calm and split some of that focus and energy away from guests and onto the food item. Another option would be to crate him or gate him off in a different room when guests are over. This will stop him from practicing the undesired behavior as well as give him a safe space away from guests, in the event that he is uncomfortable being around guests. You could also combine those two options - crate/gate and frozen food item, which is what I would suggest! Over time your dog will learn to associate guests with relaxing fun frozen food time, and you can build on those good experiences. Eventually I’d say you can give him breaks away from the gated room or crate to spend time with guests. I’d just start with a few minutes, keep it short and positive, and then have him return to his safe space. I hope that helps! If this doesn’t work out for you, I’d suggest consulting with a certified LIMA dog trainer who doesn’t use aversives. They may be able to offer additional guidance. Best of luck!

Thank you for making this video. It’s very clear and encouraging! One difficulty I have is knowing how far away I need to be to keep my dog under threshold because his reaction varies so much. Some dogs he barely notices, yet others further away send him into orbit. Any advice for this? Just start extra far away and upon success move closer?
@K9ofMine
@K9ofMine 2 күн бұрын
That can be tricky for sure! I'd suggest trying to see if there is some kind of pattern you can detect in regards to which kinds of dogs he struggles most with. Some dogs have a harder time with larger dogs, or smaller dogs, or dogs of a certain breed. I know many dogs are a lot more triggered by huskies and other dogs with fluffy, high tails and high, pointed ears. This is because that kind of posturing is intimidating in the dog world, but some breeds are just built that way naturally! Being able to detect some patterns when it comes to which dogs are tougher for your guy will be ideal!

Where are you certified as a behaviorist? I don’t know any certified animal behavior consultants who say they can fix reactivity in a few hours… it’s not that simple. There is no issue with having your dog walk in front of you. I prefer Remy to walk in front of me and it works fine for us. To each their own!

@K9ofMine
@K9ofMine 2 күн бұрын
It could be the outdoor environment is too stimulating for her! Is this in your backyard or out on a walk? I'd suggest starting by practicing the process of rewarding for silence indoors (or wherever she can take treats). You could also try higher values treats. Or, maybe there is something else that is more motivating for her, like a toy?

Your comments on the prong collars are completely wrong and couldn't be more ridiculous, and misleading! Ist off the prongs, do not dig into the dogs neck and/ or choke the dog! 2nd, the collar you showed in the video is like the size of the Titanic's anchor. 70% to 80% of dogs would work perfectly on a 2.25 mm size collar which is the size above a micro prong. The tips of the prongs are not sharp, they are subtly 4:14 rounded. The ONLY prong recommended is German quality of the Herm Springer brand. Stay away from cheap Chinese made garbage knockoffs! They are very poor quality! 3rd, it is designed to protect the trachea by dispersing pressure equally around the neck stimulating the mother dog or alpha dog using its mouth to make a correction. So this collar communicates to the dog in a way that actually makes sense to them in their own body language. 4th, you DO NOT jerk the collar or choke the dog. You teach the dog a language of learning pressure on, and pressure off. The dog learns that they control the pressure on and off switch. 5th, when a correction is applied you use a wrist pop, which quickly releases and literally gives you as little as two finger power steering control. Used in a combination of changing directions, quick flicks, verbal markers and praise, along with food reward, make the prong a total combination of a negative humane corrections, followed by a variety of positive rewards. This makes it an amazing tool which most dogs thrive & excel with! This is why the prong, along with ecollars are the preferred tools of true balanced and competitive dog training professionals! Any tool can be misused and abused. Lack of knowledge, understanding, and skills in using any tool can be damaging. Riding a tricycle vs driving a race car all comes down to the above 3 elements! It's all about how the equipment is properly used. Don't mislead people with comments such as yours if you do not know what you are talking about. P.S. All these science based quotes referring to these tools are all a bunch of garbage! Again, they are made by people wearing white coats, hiding in labs. Most, if any have never handled dogs professionally. Especially reactive & aggressive dogs. Remember, knowledge, understanding and experienced skill levels are what make the difference! Be open minded to what is advanced beyond a clicker and a bag of treats. SCIENCE!!!!!!!! Ha ha!

You can use all the excuses you want. But at the end of the day those tools function and work effectively to stop a dog from pulling because they hurt. They wouldn’t work otherwise. I don’t want that kind of relationship based on fear, force, and intimidation with my dog. So I will never recommend those tools. Some people have different values and it doesn’t bother them that they are using discomfort and pain to work with their dogs. If you insist on using tools like these, there are trainers out there who can help you use them effectively without seriously injuring your dog. But there will still be discomfort, and those trainers are few and far between (with many charlatans in the cracks). And I can tell you right now, ANY kind of jerking motion with a prong collar is unacceptable and dangerous and never recommended by trainers who use these tools, so you need to get your facts straight and consult with a real trainer who is experienced with these tools if that’s the route you want to take. And I can assure you, certified dog behavior consultants don’t “hide in labs” 😂 - they have years upon years of experience with a range of dogs, including very aggressive and reactive animals. The denial is astounding..

I’m so glad you posted this; I needed to see it. 6 weeks ago I adopted a Plott Hound from a shelter. I’ve had a Plott before but that one and my current are similar in some ways and night and say different in others. My first was Plott mixed with a European lab and, evidently, had the lab’s personality (sweet, snuggly, friends with everybody) but had the Plott’s intelligence. My current Plott is 100% Plott - temperament, reactivity, difficulty to train. Like your Remi (hopefully, I spelled that correctly), unfortunately I don’t think my current Plott is going to be everybody’s best friend, which isn’t what I wanted and and it breaks my heart.

I'm sorry, and I'm with you! It's so tough when we realize the dogs we have aren't going to be the dogs we dreamed of. Definitely let yourself mourn that loss, because it really does stink. I was pretty stuck on how different Remy was than the dog I wanted for probably an entire year! Eventually, you'll want to reflect on what really matters to you in a dog. I thought I needed a dog-friendly dog, but honestly I can't say that has really ended up mattering all that much to me (especially because dog parks aren't really great to take your dog to anyway, regardless of reactivity). Hang in there, it really does get better! I'd also suggest considering exploring dog sports -- that could be a super fun thing for you and your Plott to do together! Nosework especially could be a really great enrichment activity that also can help you two bond! Best of luck, we're rooting for you!

By law, if your dog is in public and is on a longer than 6 ft leash of any length, they are considered off leadh and you face getting a citation. The reason is if the dog is beyond a normal length they feel you do not have the ability to fully control and/ or correct the dog if there is a dangerous interaction with a child, adult or other dog.

My 11 year old Shih Tzu Bichon Oliver tore his ccl in his right leg back in february and had the lateral suture surgery. Which he stretched. So he goes back in for that on June 12th. But then this last weekend he tried jumping on furniture and hurt his good leg. We took him to the ER vet and they didn't think it was a ccl tear. The vet said he did the drawer test and x-rays and didn't see any of the signs. But as of today he is still having trouble walking. They said soft tissue injury but I am unsure as he will only walk so far before sitting down. It scares of of the idea of him having to get both legs done because of his age. But he is healthy otherwise and he loves to go for walks. I'm really hoping the vet at the ER was right. I am scheduling a recheck with our regular vet ASAP to make sure before his other leg gets worked on. He is my wife and I's baby it's been so hard.

Omg, you are so lucky. We are on day 8 after surgery (both knees) and it has been so difficult. It has changed everything in the house. Elsa is one of four huskies. She is not a healthy girl, short and very chubby and in several meds already. I look at your pup and he is getting up on his own, basically. Lifting Elsa is lifting dead weight and very hard on our backs. And she drags her knees on the floor so a week later the wounds are bleeding a bit. Definitely not like your dog. Omg, I wish. It’s been a very difficult first week, cleaning a lot of pee and not knowing what’s next. I guess it depends on the dog, health, size and … fur parent, of course 💖. In our case, it is so challenging. Have a beautiful girl reactive rescue husky shepherd from Texas. 2 yrs old. Been working on walks where other dogs walk along canal. So when I realized she goes crazy when she sees another dog I knew she couldn't handle this area. Training her inside house she has mastered. Listening looking staying loving intelligence is all there. Did Training on long line outside goes great. Her recall is decent on long lead. However on walk if she smells sees another dog all Training goes out the window. I do not exist. I have tried treats. FORGET about it. I do turn about and use avoidance techniques. Its a little better but cannot take her to trail or canal area. If I do I now park in the parking lot where she sees a dog, from a long distance. She'll lunge pull screams cries loudly standing on hind legs. I have owned gsds and rescued many other dogs in past. I really think she's emotionally distracted. She'll be hunting for other dogs on walks. This animal is the sweetest ever with people and family, as well. All she wants to do is get to a dog to play, I think. But can't let her approach another dog like that. My vet said no dog park she might get hurt. Had her at one in beginning and she went nuts playing. Also she met a bear of a dog I know in the neighborhood and she wrapped her paws around him swinging back and forth on his neck. That dog was solid and just layed down for her. I really need to give her medication or something. VERY EMOTIONAL maybe with age She'll get better? The long lead helps her experience smells. Gonna do that a lot more. People stare and can't believe what they're hearing and seeing. My dog Joleen is out if her mind amd in love with other dogs. But she cannot play right when she's in that state of mind. Her play style is very rough. My daughter has a sweet basset hound that tolerates her play and cries when she's had it. They do love each other. So what can I do with this husky shepherd crazy mix buy love her and keep working with her. Sorry for long rant. Helps to share. thank you:)

5:03 I'm struggling a little to discern the difference between bribing the dog and rewarding and reinforcing desired behavior with treats
@K9ofMine
@K9ofMine 2 ай бұрын
Great question and it can definitely be a nuanced one! A bribe would be if you have to show your dog the food item / reward in order for them to comply. A reinforcer is something you only show and give after the behavior has been performed. I do think it’s a bit more grey when dealing with reactivity - because treat scatters and magnet hands are so powerful for focusing your dog and helping them calm down, I’m not sure it really matters so much if the item is a “bribe” or a reinforcer as long as you are getting your dog into a calm state where they can stay under threshold. But I would say the goal - especially with trick training or cues - is to not have the treat out and visible before you’ve clicked or given the marker word (like “yes”). This is why having a treat pouch and getting your treat handling down can be really important! Suzanne Clothier has a really interesting article detailing this too: suzanneclothier.com/article/rewards-lures-bribes/
