There’s a lot of sleight-of-hand in this video. Consider the following: “The word ‘car’ is nowhere mentioned. The word ‘vehicle’ IS.” Do you see the trick he’s playing there? DEMOCRACY is simply a system in which power ultimately rests with the people. DIRECT democracy is a system in which decision-making is done by the people. REPRESENTATIVE democracy is a democratic system in which the people elect decision-makers on their behalf. A REPUBLIC is a system in which representatives make decisions for the public. How those representatives are selected isn’t part of the definition, so it may or may not be democratic. So is the US a democracy? In principle, yes. We elect our local, state, & federal decision-makers, so we ultimately hold power. True, we don’t elect the President or SCOTUS, but we at least elect the people who ultimately determine those offices-not totally democratic, but we at least hold some power and we need to be considered. OTOH, many states & localities have ballot initiative systems in which the public can directly propose and vote on specific laws. So our system is a mishmash of representative and direct democracy, but in all cases the power ultimately rests with the people… and if the people get annoyed enough, we have the power to nonviolently force any individual to be replaced or any aspect of our government to be changed. The bar may be extremely high to e.g. impeach & replace a SCOTUS justice, but the people ultimately have the power to make it happen. Heck, if we really wanted to, we could amend the Constitution to elect the President or SCOTUS by popular vote. Incredibly unlikely, but possible-the system absolutely allows that. Thus, we are fundamentally a democracy. But is the US a democracy in practice? Debatable. Monied interested have largely captured our legislators and courts, and while we in theory have the power to replace them, those same monied interests also control the media and thereby shape the discourse. (And that’s without getting into the issues around 45, which I don’t have the patience to go into here…) Discussions about whether the word “democracy” appears in the Constitution or whether Ben Franklin described it as a “republic” may be interesting, but they’re kind of pointless and can be dangerously misleading. The important questions are: - Do the people ultimately hold power? - How do the people exercise power? - Is the ability of the people to exercise power being subverted? Word games are just a distraction.

And here's the rub. People say we are not a direct democracy. These say that we are an [indirect or representative democracy]. Yet at the end of the day, they call us a democracy. Now, the framers had enough angst AGAINST A DEMOCRACY, that they literally loathed and feared it. The reason that they DID NOT call us a democracy was the fact that to them, a democracy and a republic were two entirely seperate things. It's not the difference between "vehicle" and "car". It is the difference between night and day. Get it right.

When @KZbin does not allow dissent, even though it breaks no reasonably understood community standard, THIS is a perfect example of ideological democracy. Those in power, grouped by ideology, yield all of the power over dissent.
