this is owned by a property tycoon called Simon Halabi. It was supposed to be turned into the UK’s first 6-star hotel years ago, but is falling in disrepair. It is guarded and the exterior well maintained in case someone wants to make an offer for it.

My father worked on this project at DOT in the 70s. I came across this video while researching some of the projects he worked on. He may or may not be one of the people in that group photo.... Thanks for sharing it!

i find seagulls (in any country) seeing the Mini 2 as a threat and did kamikaze manoeuvers against it (Iceland, Spain and Croatia).

If I'm not mistaken, the French aérotrain, was the first and original one. Jean Bertin literally invented many technologies and things to made it reality. Other aérotrain or hovertrains, are often copies of the one from Jean Bertin, which had explored already different types of engines and propulsions. Copies not even as good and as great as the French aérotrain, with often major problems and defaults, or wrong engineering choices. Far from to be capable to enter into production, while Jean Bertin version was ready to enter service.

We used to take the One pound non landing trips hovercraft trips. It started when my cousin got married and six of us took the trip to get a lot of duty free. On the pound trip you qualified for full Duty free allowance. You bought your booze, placed it on a trolley which you took to the Hovercraft, where it was loaded. You took the trip to Calais and stayed aboard whilst the craft was turned around. Went back to Dover where you took your booze loaded trolley through customs and to you car. We took these trips occasionally for many years. Until the service was closed.

Went on one of these to Calais in the mid 90s from Dover and it was fantastic. Loud, brash, beautiful machines that as a kid I absolutely loved. We will never see them again and that is a shame.

I never knew they were so big and certainly didn't know they carried cars too. My secondary school in Nottinghamshire owned a hovercraft. I never knew the history of it. It was a similar size to the one the woman is on, maybe a little smaller and the teacher Mr Hoffman used to take it on the school field at dinnertimes.

Rohr (Chula Vista CA) was big into transit in the 1970s, from a concept bus to Bay Area Rapid Transit's first fleet of light rail cars. It also built six Turboliner trainsets for Amtrak. But none of this lasted. Rohr, which also made aircraft components in Chula Vista and Foley AL, was bought out by Goodrich Aerospace many years ago.
