Can't beat the appeal of a 58/1.2 lens! I've had dozens of fast fifties throughout the years and this one was unfortunately one of those that found other hands after a while. From all the vintage Planars with a 3+4 design, I liked it just a bit less than the Contax Carl Zeiss 50/1.4. Several companies attempted that design, or a 4+3 one (with Canon 50/1.2LTM being my fav), all of them had a slightly different look to them. Somehow on my pursuit of having "the perfect 7 element Planar" I stumbled upon this Rokkor's sibling, the 58/1.4 which is a more traditional symmetrical 3+3 Double Gauss (just like the really well known Helios 44 series of 58/2.0 lenses) and absolutely fell in love with that one. On top of that, it fully covers a GFX sensor, leaving room for tilt/swing, unlike most f/1.2 lenses and about half of the other 50-58mm vintage glass. It's an interesting world we live in know, where there's just so much choice and everyone can find something for themselves :)

Like a few others have mentioned, I am surprised by the softness of the lens at f/2. I have the Minolta MD 50mm f/2 and it is pretty darn sharp at f/2. Also, and I am not trying to be a troll, but I think yoy mean spherical aberration instead of halation, since halation is common to film cameras where particularly bright light reflects off of the film, then bounces off the rear element, back in to the film again (at least, that is how I understand, but I ain't no scientist). MAYBE there is halation caused by light reflecting off a digital sensor and then reflecting back off the rear element. Either way, I think the effect is somewhat similar, but I think halation is more pronounced / limited to the highlights, while SA would affect the entire luminance range of the image. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I am an addict to the low aperture lenses for my street photography. My very first low aperture lens was Minolta 58mm 1.2, which became very quickly a gateway drug to the bokeh photography world. I, since then, purchased TTArtisian 50mm 0.95, Mitakon 50mm 0..95, Laowa 35mm 0.95, and Voigtlander 50mm 1.0 in pursuit of a perfect lens with perfect characters. My two top picks right now are Voigtlander 50mm F1.0 and TTArtisan 50mm F-0.95. Both give the sharpness and the vintage painting look of the characters that meld the heart when viewed. I additionally pair them with Sony and TechArt adapter to use them as autofocus lenses. I need these lenses with reliable autofocus even at 0.95 when I shoot the spontaneous moments on street. I own many clinically prefect Sony GM lenses but I still end up with picking up these bokeh monsters over others to the street. I love these bokeh monster lenses!!!!!

You can definitely put this on another adapter. However, I would point out that the lens is full frame. So a speed booster adapter would make sense for like a C70, R7, R50, etc. Using a speed booster in a full frame body, I would expect that to vignette a bit.

How do you like the Kowa 16-H? The Kowa B&H clears full frame at 63mm comfortably. At 58mm, I do get a little vignette, but at 2.39:1, there is no issue. I know the Helios 44-2 is a super popular taking lens for the Kowa B&H, but I don’t really have any experience using it. I definitely want to experiment more with taking lenses too! Especially lenses with interesting character. I’m particularly curious about what the bokeh will look like from the Zenitar ME-1 (2 blade square aperture) and the Heinz Kilfitt Makro Kilar 90mm with its double circle bokeh.

This is obviously a very damaged copy of the 45/2. A good copy of this lens is very sharp wide open with none of the blooming you showed - which is not normal nor "part of the character of the lens" and is obviously caused by the amount of fungus inside. A normal copy just has a bit of softness in the corners. Wide open it's nowhere close to the image at 2:30. This Minolta 45mm F2 is frequently adapted to medium format cameras like Fujifilm GFX 50R or 100S - which house big 50 & 100MP sensors, which is clear evidence of its usability wide open and beyond. It sits on my 50r at this very moment. This particular lens you tested has either a misaligned lens element inside or it's purely the fungus messing the image quality up. Or both. I you review a lens with obvious faults and defects, make a disclaimer at the start of the video. But you never connected the bad results wide open to the fungus...
@michaelmarshallphotography55152 ай бұрын
This is fair. I will give the concession that the fungus could have damaged the coatings of the lens and resulted in lower IQ and blooming. Perhaps I should have been a bit more assertive to the fact that this is not a pristine example of the lens. That said, for this copy of the lens, I stand by my tests. And I stand by the conclusion that it is a lens worth owning. I'll look into getting a pristine copy and doing a comparison. Thank you for the comment and the watch!

I have the 50s version and I like it a lot. One thing to consider is that you should get it serviced. A more than 60 years old lens is unlikely to be well aligned. I love the performance of mine, it has some softness on the edges that I like because I don’t want my edges to be distractingly sharp. It also has very three-dimensional quality that modern lenses do not exhibit. It will not fit with a more modern set of lenses, that’s why I got a whole set of those old Zeiss glass from 20mm to 135mm. 35 mm Flek is actually a great portrait lens.
@michaelmarshallphotography55153 ай бұрын
That’s completely fair. My copy may just need a good SLA. I will note, I didn’t cover this in the video…I wonder how much impact the fotodiox adapter is having? There is definitely a glass element in the adapter. What camera are you shooting on? And if it’s a digital, what adapter are you using?

It's a shame they didn't make it into the digital age. Collecting vintage glass I've become quite fond of Minolta and their history. From my understanding they were way ahead of the competition with regards to coatings and they did everything on their own in-house, no outsourcing of any kind. I got the not quite as exotic MD 50 1.2 III which exhibits the typical vintage fast fifty flaws such as chromatic aberration, softness etc, but unlike many other vintage lenses it is very sharp stopped down and perfectly usable for landscape which is more than can be said for many others.

It is definitely a dream. Both the Canon 55mm F/1.2 SSC Aspherical and the Nikon 58mm F/1.2 NOCT are so expensive. Maybe one day I'll get to try them. But I'm not going to hold my breath! Lol.

I use this lense on gfx camera and it’s very sharp at f2, you can almost see every hair on a persons face

Interesting. I wonder how much variation there is between copies of this lens. In my usage, it's very sharp at f2.8 and f4. But f2 has a lot of character but is extremely soft. That's cool to know. I might try and pick up a second copy to compare. Thank you for watching!

On a copy without fungus like this one, it's sharp wide open. It's my walkaround lens on my 50r. It's better wide open than most vintage 50mm F1.8's or 1.4's.

Nice lens! I paid $40 for mine in very good condition. Shooting on Micro 4/3 basically elimnates soft corners and vignetting

That's awesome! I am curious to test it on different crop sensors and see how the performance is impacted. What camera are you shooting?

If you got that lens for $15 you got a deal. Not bad for budget lens.

I definitely think it's a great lens for the money. And I'd be willing to pick it up for more! I find I am very partial to the 45mm angle of view.

This is a great review. This lens is quite the drop off from the Minolta 50mm 1.4, but for $15 bucks, not the end of the world. Nice to see another Maryland guy and Ellicott City recover from the flooding.
@michaelmarshallphotography55155 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Great to receive a comment from another Marylander! OEC is so different now that they are removing buildings to prevent future floods. But still one of my favorite places to go!

@steven1811I have the 50mm but was curious about this as it seems like it's significantly thinner and also curious about the 5mm wider lens. Curious to hear more about what you think the significant drop off between the two is!
@steven18113 ай бұрын
@@geoffreybalasi4342 the 45mm is thin. Not quite a pancake lens, but it is very lightweight. I can only compare the 50mm to other lenses that I own. The 50mm has the sharpness of the Sears Auto 55mm 1.4 with the bokeh of the Leica Summitar. To me, the 50mm is magical. A top 10 vintage lens for sure.

Nice video and presentation! I was considering buying this lens too, but seeing how soft it is at f2 makes me kinda think otherwise now.
@michaelmarshallphotography55155 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! And thank you for watching! I totally get that. I think the price would heavily factor. If you get a deal like we happened to stumble on, I’d say go for it. It does improve a lot at f2.8. But it all depends on price and value.

This lens is full of fungus. Of course it blooms wide open. A normal copy is sharp wide open and used on sensors larger than full frame.
