I've carefully watched your decoding to understand how I can get my hitch vault unlocked. At 3:57 your clip briefly shows the 'thin shim of metal with a notch cut cut in it' and I want to make this so that I can decode my vault. I think it's stuck somehow and my code doesn't release the lever to open it. I checked out your link to the 'covertinstruments' webpage and I really don't want the stuff that they present there.....I'm not interested in being able to break into any lock. Can you help me with a picture of your tool so that I can replicate it and then try to follow your steps to align the locking mechanism? THX in advance. Gary

Curious question here - If you have access to the backing plate, would it be possible and/or potentially more efficient to delicately reset the dials internally to a new combination? Or at perhaps at least disengage the reset screw to allow such?

@theareticallysecure 4 ай бұрын
Yes, but when it's inserted into the casing, the back plate is inaccessible.

So cool to see this process and the explanations were perfect. I was going to ask about what oil could be used? Will any oils work? Looking forward to the rest of the series ✌🏻🌶
@theareticallysecure
@theareticallysecure Жыл бұрын
There are a number of oils that can be used for it. General rule of thumb is the higher the smoke point, the better. Outside of motor oil, a lot of people use olive oil for a quench. I prefer motor oil partially because it's free. I would have to dispose of it if I didn't use it after an oil change. Plus, it's *far* less likely to catch on fire in a problematic way. With larger pieces, it often has a *little* fire, but not a threatening amount, and it is extinguished as it pulls the heat out of the work piece.

Another very interesting video. I have very limited metal working knowledge but have made many full custom picks using 301 HY stainless steel. I mostly shape the tip using hacksaw and files to keep the down for fear of weakening the steel. Using the Dremmel to cut the steel saved you time, but because it was heated up, you had to temper it. Which seemingly added back the time with interest and is also a complicated process for someone without the required skills or knowledge. My question to you as a blacksmith is, when making pick tips, are there benefits of your method? Is it better to use no heat when shaping the tips or to use heat then temper the steel afterwards?
@theareticallysecure
@theareticallysecure Жыл бұрын
It really depends on quantity. If you're making several pick tips, it's far quicker to use the Dremel, then heat treat. If you're making one or two, it's quicker to use a file and not need the heat treat step. If you're starting with properly heat treated metal, there's no benefit other than time savings with a high quantity. However, there is also no benefit to using the file and hacksaw if you're making more than about two of them if you are able to properly HT the picks yourself. The temper itself takes more time, but that's idle time that you can spend doing anything else. I just set a timer so I know when to go outside again and restart the heat cycle.
