Thanks for compiling this part of Lena history. I remember seeing the boxes of canned goods spilled all over and maybe pork. Interesting to note that it was prior to the build out forward of the cheese plant...no whey room or "to the sidewalk" building wall. I guess I don't remember when that expansion occurred.

Thanks Fred for posting this. A great presentation and history about Dorothy and her husband, (two Iowa State Alumni) who helped to expand the USA domestic specialty as well as the Baby Swiss cheese markets.

I think I had a family member (Stuart Daws) in the one building that was a "pool hall" when this train wrecked but survived.. Actually my family doesn't do well around trains, Douglas Daws was killed by a train in Lena, but that had been in 1950's? The Land O' Corn Train, he was leaving bible school and crossing the tracks to get to his dentist apt.

Wow.. Interesting I think I may have heard that story from my grandmother.

Sorry I had to edit my grammar on the last post. I believe three Daws were hurt or killed by a train uptown Lena. One other guy, he's a cousin of my dads (?) he also had an accident. I'm 37 years old, but I remember that wreck. I was reading through my dads baby book and the obituary and news clippings were in there. When I come back to Lena next month I need to make copies of it. If you go to the Lena commentary, entering through the main entrance the big DAWS and STOUFFER stones and other family members, you can find Douglas Daws Stone, small slant and it has his picture on it. I love finding out things about Lena and the past, and have a collection of many pictures from uptown. The Hatchery was my families also and many other buildings, like the Lena State Bank, I have two calendars from when it was located on Main St. and when my great grandfather took part in the current one.

I can not forget this...thanks for posting Fred...I saw it happen from the beginning...I was 6yrs. old at the time and in Doctor Vickery's office in the waiting room...heard the train coming and looked out the window to watch it come through (loved trains)....after a short time I saw a wheel fly off of a train car.

Nice, I was 8 living just one block away in the basement of our house. Heard the fire whistle go off, saw the fire men climbing under the train cars to get to the fire station. I spent Christmas vacation watching crews clean up the mess.
