If you were playing pick up bb, would you pick steve alford or charles barkley, despite the fact of all those rings alford has. I believe most would agree that stockton was better than Alford as well. Bobby knight is the president of the royal pain in the ass group, and while he screams and talks about discipline he had none. If he had been disciplined himself he could have coached for many more years, and now is remembered only for being an ass hole if your honest. For barkley to have lost 9 pounds in 18 days means hecwould needed to burn 31,500 calories more than he took in. That would have been hard but not beyond doing at his age and muscle mass. I still think knight just did it to get rid of him, he needed a reason to cut the 2nd best player he had.

Barkley wasn't a shock. We got to see some olympic prelims in Bloomington. Barkley had a reputation as a crybaby at auburn and must have been 300 lbs when he got to the tryouts. I've never liked Knight, but he was at the peak of his powers at the time, and there was no way he was going to bother with anyone who wasn't 100% committed. The Stockton snub is harder to reconcile if it's strictly about merit, but personal loyalties often win out. Regardless the squad he put together beat everybody by at least 20 points, so can't really argue with the results. 😊

I was around in 1984, I read all of the magazines and listened to all of the sports reports and the word at the time was that Charles Barkley was the best player in camp bar none. That's right. Even better than Jordan. All of the players were shocked that he got cut and the word was that Knight cut Charles not because he didn't lose weight but because he wanted to prove a point that he was in charge and that anyone could get cut. There is a lot of revisionist history going on right now about that team.

Steve Alford who played for Knight at Indiana (6’1”, 163) at age 19 over 22 year old John Stockton (6’1”, 170). Jeff Turner over Charles Barkley? Bobby Knight was a *dictatorial clown.* Interesting Bobby Knight didn’t cut Patrick Ewing due to the *controversy* that it would cause. He wanted to keep Joe Kleine and Jon Koncak over Ewing. *Controversy that he wanted to cut the black center with the black head coach in John Thompson at Georgetown.*

What would have made this clip more interesting would have been more analysis and pointing out who made the team instead of the future superstars who didn't. For example, instead of center/forward Malone, Knight chose Jon Koncak and Joe Kleine, two very mediocre players who lacked any outside shooting and jumping ability as evidenced by their limited NBA careers. Instead of Barkley, Jeff Turner was chosen, again a mediocre talent. Instead of Stockton, Knight chose showed nepotism in picking Steve Alford and Leon Wood, who were no match for Stockton-or for that matter the great Joe Dumars. Unfortunately, in most cases, it was lesser white players chosen over more talented blacks.

Rivalry: From 1988-1990, the Isiah Thomas-led Detroit Pistons were 26-9 against the Michael Jordan-led Bulls, eliminating them 3 straight seasons in the playoffs. The 1991 ECF Facts: Isiah Thomas took just 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2; Bill Laimbeer took just 7 shots in game 1 and only 2 shots in game 2; Joe Dumars took just 10 shots in game 1 and only 10 shots in game 3; Chuck Daly played John Salley only 9 minutes in game 2 and played James Edwards only 11 minutes in game 2 and just 9 minutes in game 3. Those are the facts. If your scorers do not shoot and your coaching staff does not play your front court major minutes, what will happen? Those are things the Pistons did, you do that, it's a recipe for losing. If Detroit did this vs. Atlanta, Boston, or previously vs. Chicago or any other team, they would have lost. 1991 ECF Stat Facts: Chicago had a 117-76 foul shot attempt advantage from games 1-3, so even if both teams shot 100% from the line, no way statistically Detroit could have won. Game 1: Chicago 94 Detroit 83; Bulls shot 37 foul shots, Detroit 15; Game 2: Chicago 105 Detroit 97; Bulls shot 45 foul shots, Detroit 25. Game 3: Chicago 113 Detroit 107, Detroit shot 36 foul shots, Chicago 35. The back-to-back world champion Pistons got only one more foul shot attempt at home vs. Chicago in the 1991 ECF. Game 1 it was a 22 shot differential by the Bulls; game 2 it was a 20 point foul shot differential by Chicago and game 3 it was only 1 in Detroit's favor. The Pistons won back-to-back championships through defense and half court execution but mainly defense was their strong point. So the back-to-back world champion Pistons were so undisciplined defensively that they could incur a 117-76 foul shot attempt disadvantage in 3 games against a team they were 26-9 against eliminating them three straight years in the post season. Does this even make sense? 1991-92: In the summer of 1991, Pistons GM, Jack McCloskey waived Vinnie Johnson and traded James Edwards to the Clippers. Detroit went from an injured team in 1990-91, having 5 guys in their 8 man rotation injured (Thomas - wrist/ankle; Dumars - toe/groin; Edwards, Salley, and Aguirre - back) with Vinnie Johnson and James Edwards, still winning 50 and making it to the ECF to 1991-92 not having Vinnie Johnson and James Edwards being totally healthy only winning 48 games and losing in the first round to the Knicks, this is the impact of James 'Budha' Edwards and Vinnie 'The Microwave' Johnson - 2 rounds. Conclusion: Based upon the facts, what happened is the Pistons let Chicago win in the 1991 ECF by their scorers not shooting the ball and Chuck Daly not playing his front court major minutes, then the Pistons broke up their team in the off season in 1991 never to compete for titles. All of those things which happened to the Isiah Thomas-led Detroit Pistons were done by the Detroit Pistons, nobody else. They were the ones who's scorers did not shoot the ball, the Pistons were the ones who didn't play their front court; the Pistons were the ones who traded James Edwards and waived Vinnie Johnson. This was 100% led and done by the Detroit Pistons, nobody else. All of the actions of the Isiah Thomas-led Pistons had to do with the Pistons, not the Bulls. The Walk-Off Facts: The 3 guys that led the infamous 'walk-off' in the 1991 ECF are all from Chicago: Mark Aguirre, Bill Laimbeer, and James Edwards. Handshake: Joe Dumars, Vinnie Johnson, John Salley and coach Chuck Daly shook hands; Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, James Edwards, Dennis Rodman and Mark Aguirre did not shake hands. This is the truth and those are the facts and this is what happened in the Isiah Thomas-led Detroit Pistons vs. the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls. There was no rivalry. Isiah Thomas 3, Michael Jordan 1, the one Jordan got, Thomas gave to him.
