I get the biggest laugh out of "conservatives" citing Archie Bunker ( Carroll O'conner ) as some kind of spokesperson for them. First off the creator of "All in the Family" was super-dooper LIBERAL Norman Lear- founder of the super LIBERAL organization People for the American Way. Norman Lear was a WW2 vet who became increasingly left wing the older he got. He created the conservative curmudgeon Archie Bunker as the spokesperson for the aging , grouchy , out-of-touch New Yorker. Archie Bunker was, in turn, played by another super LIBERAL WW2 vet , Caroll O'conner. I watched the entire "all in the Family" and "Archie Bunker's Place" when it was originally airing on CBS back in the 1970's and 1980's. As the series went on Archie Bunker became more and more liberal....especially after his wife ("Edith") died of a stroke. By the time "Archie Bunker's Place ended" Arch had given up his prejudice against blacks, jews, catholics, et cetera. He went into business with a Jewish partner, he hired a homosexual as a waiter, he even had a couple of cooks who turned out to be illegal immigrants, but they were hard working and Arch came to see them as people, not just characatures. . Archie Bunker grew a heart, he grew compassion....he could no longer live in the fear and ignorance that he did early in the series. Archie Bunker was created by Norman Lear that people who shared Bunker's narrow view of America might reflect on how their anger and resentment ultimately becomes a self-made prison.

It's hilarious how many people don't realize that Archie Bunker was a parody of a right wing moron.

These clips make Archie seem like the goat...but if you watch the show he was the butt of every joke and usually "came around" to the idiotic leftist way of thinking he was railing against. The entire crew of the show were a bunch of leftist dirtbags who were mystified that the public liked him so much despite their best efforts...including the guy playing him.
