I made some with tallow actually, I reccomend it! (You just have to do it right so the tallow doesn't go bad) If you process it yourself with the wet method you can get the scent almost entirely out. If you buy it then it usually doesn't smell like much. Just be ready for a god awful amount of work. It took me 5 days to finally have a finished gallon of tallow that had an almost unnoticeable smell when I had started with cuts from the butcher. I could arguably keep going too. Smells almost nothing like beef now though. You've really got to concentrate to smell it and a little bit of anything else that has a smell fixes that to where it's basically impossible

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am a woodturner and blacksmith, and do not know how to get my made things into hands of folks who would want it. I considered etsy, but read many negative things from makers. I am thinking now of squarespace, but beyond maintaining a website the hugest hurdle is a social media presence. I like what I do, and am not a vid maker. Farmers markets and holiday bizarres have been my best successes.

Looking at this it's 50-50... these are small businesses who have made thousands on Etsy so it is clearly a potentially good platform to be on. I think admin mistakes and utter abuse can happen on any platform, if there is a point to make- have you seen the fees?? They charge something like a quarter of what you make on there. Also if you have a small business, PLEASE have different platforms to engage with customers so they can find you elsewhere, link your own website to all of your platforms in every way you can.

Easy are bad Don't ever use them for business They are just another amazon .....and it means the quality has fallen It's full of Chinese market trying to under cut and push out ....genuine hardworking sellers around world It's no longer a place for antiques , crafts and art etc They also sell us poisonous, untested, poor quality crap to us ..and keep all good safe materials for themselves, their own people... They have systematically tried to make us all fail or fall ill etc.. Stay away at all costs Easy uses people as cash cows ..sadly...

After watching craft videos and another video on how Etsy has fallen yesterday, YT decided you should be next on my to watch list haha. I usually ignore the recommendations, but I'm glad I didn't. My story on Etsy is... 12 years long I think? I started an account before 2012 but I only started selling in 2012. Always been a tiny store to earn extra to buy myself nice things, so the most I made in one year was around 50 sales. My last good year was 2020 (for obvious reasons) and since then my yearly sale numbers have been going downhill by over half of the previous number. A lot has been going wrong with Etsy for a while, but I still managed to make enough sales to justify staying around, plus, there aren't that many international friendly websites that don't have paid membership or something similar. But when I made my first sale this year of 13€ overall and out of that I earned 2.50€... I was like "oh yeah no, this is over." So I'm currently still open there, but letting all listings go sold out (also no auto-renew) until I settle down for good on another alternative. I also have a smaller horror story from a couple of years ago maybe? I don't remember when. But I had 5 stars rating from many sales, and then *just* because of one 3 star review (person was just... not nice), the average dropped to 4 stars (or less, I don't remember how it was at the time). From one lower review. Something was fishy about that, but I never really dug into that.

I love Etsy, but if I want mass produced crap frommChina and not artisans, I'm done. I do pick and choose what I buy there very carefully. Been burned before and unless I have experience with vendor or see a hell of number of positive reviews,I don't bother.

You're a kind person, and a thoughtful human being. Even though I'm just seeing this, 10 months after you posted , I cried too when I saw the dead bunny. I believe that people like yourself hold up your particular corner of the universe. You have gravity. Your kindness and honesty affect more than you know. Needless to say, the Etsy shop I was contemplating is no longer an option. Your experience and opinion is so appreciated.

it's 2024, and sadly it appears the market share was soaked up by Amazon, Squarespace and Shopify - all part of huge corporations. It's a sad state of affairs for the small business and middle class these days.

The problem is “their” customers still think they are buying from handmade small businesses. When I had my own Etsy store I had a job transferring people to my own site, because people want fast and cheap even though that’s not possible for handmade

Few months ago (rubbish, it was in january/february) I decided I was going to start up an Etsy shop, and in my ever purposely accelerating alienation from the entire human race, I am drowning in my stuff. I got boxes full of crafted stuff, neatly packed and tagged. I've looked into Etsy many many years ago, but always found their commission too high. (I used to sell on a swedish platform, Tradera, which is similar to ebay and it was perfect. Not worth it though after I moved away from sweden, cause customers would have to pay for the shipping price and with the merge of danish/swedish postal "service", it's too expensive for people. I wouldn't do that to them. Some months ago, I kinda got addicted to buying stuff on Etsy, and this is where I rekindled the idea of a shop. For me it kinda fell to the ground again, when I found out, that everything now can be bought on Etsy. Need a print of something? - just go Etsy and buy and download a .pdf file. Need a store bought piece of clothing, just go on Etsy and buy it cheaper. Since then, me wanting to sell on Etsy, has disappeared. I think I'll now and then buy from the people that I've bought handcrafted items from, but I'll do it directly if possible. So Thank you heaps, for this video. It made it easy for me to change my mind now. It won't be Etsy.

Yeah I live in Japan but I love collecting handmade anime collections, but I got bitten, I sent fake items from shien I was heartbroken, a colleague at work showed me images. I contacted Etsy and they were no use, so I threatened Legal action against the seller as I spent a lot of money, they so reacted and refunded me ASAP. How on earth do they allow this

Etsy has always been a kind of disaster. Originally it was massively overpriced crap, with insane postage fees, relying on the prestige of buying handmade. It was very boutique .. which made it unpopular with people like me. I could get the same stuff elsewhere for much cheaper, or make it myself. I had no interest in supporting people making overpriced dog treats in their expensive kitchens. Now it's just another Am@zon.

Etsy is an uphill battle unless you already have a large network and deep pockets. I’ve heard people steal designs/ideas for their own shops as well.

As a former customer of Etsy, I no longer bother with them anymore and haven't for over a year. It began with the onslaught of sellers claiming to sell handmade items that were not. I would find the items throughout the web, and even on Amazon and Ebay. Many of the items were made by factories in China, yet present a face that they were being made by individuals. I even contacted some sellers who claimed to make an item by hand confronting them with photos of that item available on Temu and Aliexpress. And stubbornly one claimed the item was handmade simply because the handle of the item was "slightly" narrorower... Really? You then admit copying a design and what? After contacting Etsy twice and not receiving any response, I deleted my account and that was the end. It's a crappy company, and yet still poeople seem to buy into the homey, crunchy granola, hand crafted styling and marketing.

Amazon locked me out of my account globally a few years back, I not only used to shop there, but run a few AWS servers and was an Amazon Prime customer (thanks to Jeremy Clarkson punching that producer) as well. The reason given was a "suspicious transaction": I bought a friend in London a birthday gift (a drone worth around a thousand pounds) while away on business in Germany. I was a customer for 20+ years. They could have phoned and asked if the transaction was really mine. Never went back. Never work with companies who don't appreciate your business.

Holding someone else's money for 45 days should be illegal. It's temporary theft. And when they do, they should be legally required to pay an interest on your money for those 45 days.

I remember reading about an etsy seller saying that her store/account was hacked and basically any orders that came in, the money was redirected to another bank account, not hers. She contacted Etsy about it and they said there was nothing they could do about it. They also refused to have better security to stop breaches like that even though it kept happening to other sellers as well.
