I came here to see if there was good views of the innards as one of mine is working just fine but it is very rattly and burbly, if that makes sense. No amount of shaking, tilting or turning the radiator (turned the whole computer while running!) made any difference. I assume it is the impellers shaft that has either worked it self loose or has just worn away so much material around it that there has been introduced a shimmy and it is knocking about in there. Looking at the design I guess there more or less is only one way to build these things and that they all are comparabel, so I may just try opening it and see if anything is to be done :) Another thing: how about using ethanol or a mix of a high ratio of concetrated glycol used in cars and some distilled water? Alchohol would be safe when it comes to leaks as that would do nothing bad to the computer if there was a leak, and it would also evaporate quite quickly if it was left unattended. I guess the ethanol would dry out rubber parts, but are there seals and hoses not some sort of vinyl or silicone that should withstand corrosive elements?

Hmm might be good on a laptop though cause it has a battery to avoid sudden shutdown due to power anyways.

I am looking at getting a PCI version to test with a retro Pentium 3, Pentium 2, Pentium, or dare I say 486 with a PCI motherboard. Has anyone had success with this, and if so can you boot from a SATA drive on it connected to one of these older vintage computers?

You can do this with Windows too. You just need rufus, cause it gives you the option to install windows as "windows to go" I personally run tiny 10 on a thin client

The thing is, you can still find these (enterprise) drives new (or the PM983, or the PM963) for almost the same price as other (consumer) drives on the market, difference being that these have a few more times endurance, and they simply do not throttle under stress, they give all the advertised speed until the full disk is written. Latency and IOPS tend to hold a lot better under load too. And they will not corrupt data when the power goes off, they have capacitors that commit the cache to the NAND in an event of power loss. The 3.84tb PM883 has 4gb of dram as cache, so it absorbs small OS writes like crazy, just got one (used) for 120 usd....

I know it's kind of ridiculous, but I was wondering if you still had these on hand. I desperately wanted them back in middle school so when (by some incredible stroke of luck) I found and purchased the first computer I ever built from back then it seemed necessary to get these for some story arc completion.
