Great! Make sure you use the heavy-duty black ties or the metal ones. My clear ones are beginning to snap. Let me know how your catio turns out by joining my Facebook group, DIY Project Station: facebook.com/groups/882510523338538

Nice engineering and explanation... if I do this I'll have to be sure to begin 'flea drop treatments' because of the visting cats, raccoons, possums, skunks, etc.

Couple of things... 1 PVC becomes very brittle over time due to exposure to the sun, hot weather and even fluctuating temperature extreme. It just doesn't last a long time. Because of this, not gluing all of the joints can become problematic for structure security and safety for the cats. I would highly recommend gluing the joints together, at least the base frame and exterior frame - walls, roof. True, PVC is inexpensive compared to other building materials and very quick and easy to construct, however regarding long-lasting, it just doesn't last. I have been in the construction industry for over 25+ years, and I have myself built things using PVC because of the same simple easy to use reasons. Hot weather and very cold weather really shortens the life and strength of PVC. The good thing is that you can cut out and replace certain areas of the decaying PVC over time as needed. Don't put it in direct sunlight over extended periods of time. This will shorten the lifespan of the PVC. Utilizing some type of shade will prolong the PVC. However PVC does STILL dry out and eventually weaken, crack and become very brittle. It's not a forever material that is exposed to the weather.

Great points, thanks for sharing. You may be right about PVC, but it doesn't have to last forever, LOL.

While Trex says 16" oc joist spacing is ok for residential decks go with 12" commercial oc spacing so it don't feel like a diving board when walking on it especially with heavier mowers. I wish now I did for my deck.

Super over-engineered, but nothing wrong with that. When you rip the 2x4's they will feel "mushy" but that's because the ripped section needs to be on compacted earth/gravel which supports it. But I agree, there is more integrity to the frame with the full box construction (the rip design usually relies on the deck boards to hold the frame square.) Joint tape... LOL... that must be necessary since the green-ies killed real pressure treating and oil based paints. Now... just what type of petroleum based chemicals are in that tape? hmmm?

Hi, I am making a similar catio based off your design. I couldn't quite see what type of connectors and/or how the pipe was situated just under the roof. It looks like there is a connector facing outward but wonder if that is necessary...

I'm not sure what you are referring to. The best place to see the frame, begins at 2:27 into the video. Maybe check that out?

Looks great. This is something that I have wanted to do with my house but I am not sure I have the skills to do it. Every time I attempt a project it never works out like the video I watched. If you don’t mind sharing, what was the approximate cost of the wood used just for the gable? Also, I noticed you attached the gable over the existing roof, so are those boards just exposed on the top of your house? I didn’t see a photo/video showing what this looked like after shingles were installed.
@RoBeaird
@RoBeaird Ай бұрын
Thanks! I can only tell you the cost for all the lumber was $5,900. The roofers did a good job covering the gable valleys with various materials to seal them. The best shot of it completed is 8:50 minutes into the video. I'm sorry I didn't get up on the roof to video the process.
