yep, its just bad, i scrapped the entire thing, i realized that after i took it all out, i was going to have to put it back in.. but as a famous cartoon roll model of mine once said, "Mister, I don't think you realize who you're talking to. I'm Johnny Bravo, the one-man army!". so you got this.

i dont know about the diesels, ive heard they are heavier but are easier to remove. if you have the option, just drop the subframe and everytihng from under the car, now that i have a hoist thats what i would do different,, although the hidden, obstructed bolts will still make it interesting.

Kind of curious if the Auto is so much different to the manual. One thing, you mention is the engine mount on the right side. Doing a head gasket now and removed that mount to help access to the timing chain. I never had any issue getting it off? I can understand the rant to an extent, but I'm wondering if it is as hard as you make out because that mount wasn't hard. I'll be taking the motor out of my 2nd T30 next after doing the head gasket in this one.

Have to say thank-you for the video. I hear your frustration. We used your video to get a good idea of where the issues were. In the end we removed the subframe (leaving the steering rack in the car, we also just removed the half shafts from the hubs and left the bottom arms on the struts. We removed the AC compressor and the electrical loom, water pipes etc and then lowered the engine, box and transfer case complete onto a motorbike lift. In all it took about 2 days to get it out and a day to get it back in. If we hadnt seen your video we wouldn't have looked a the problem issues/areas you had to see how we could work around them or what could be done. But it is the worst car I have ever worked on for changing a clutch.

I tried to get those 2 bolts of the steering rack that connect it to the subframe... Broke a 19mm socket and the angle its at makes it really impossible, did you drop the subframe with the steering rack to be able to get access to those bolts better and then leave it on the car?

I feel your pain. I went to do a clutch on one of these once. I couldnt believe the worn parts as l disassembled the required components to get to the clutch. Im a qualified mechanical trade school teacher with 40 years experience and lve never seen anything like this. It took over 26 hrs to do the job. Sure that included modifying it to a single mass flywheel but we had to replace every gearbox seal and transfer case seal. Rear main. Drive shafts. Struts. Hub bearings. Overhaul calipers. Tie rods. Front engine pipe. Rear engine mount. All that on a dealer maintained car every 10K with 180000. On the the speedo. What a piece of rubbish. If this owner had to pay for labour on top of all the parts the car would have been sent to the scrape pile.

I see your pain mate. Just did a manual AWD Rav4 (clutch and transfer box replacement) on the weekend in the back shed. It's amazing that the Toyota layout is near 100% identical to the Nissan setup - the Japanese engineers clearly follow each other. I had watched your video prior to me starting and saw your frustration so I stopped and thought about this a lot. And how they assembled the car in the first place - which would have been quite quick I reckon. I don't have a nice 2 post hoist either in the back shed - all I do have is a crappy Supercheap engine crane and this is my secret weapon. The little secret is to suspend the complete engine and trans with the engine crane (not a cross beam) from above and then remove the drive shafts, exhaust, mounts, suspension and crossmembers below. I gave up years ages ago trying to split things up insitu and trying to take the easy way out. Just go mad with a rattle gun for 20 minutes. Also - Golden rule - the electrics disconnect from the other end of the loom. Leave the engine side bits connected. Once the assembly is hanging from the crane - then lower the engine/trans assembly on to a low riding dolley (Bunnings) - even a peice of crappy carpet. The engine crane is then setup to lift the front of the car enough (using slings on the rails) so I can pull out the engine and trans under the left or right wheel arch. The car is on a wicked angle by then but works for me. I didn't even take the bonnet off in this case. Took me around 6 hours being the firtst time with a Rav. Done a heap of RWD cars with this method over the years. I use a trolley jack as well on a RWD trans with the hoist. Basically drop the engine and trans (never split them) to the ground and lift the car front end up enough to drag it all out from underneath. Would still love a 2 post hoist though - dont get me wrong. Something to think about next time and hope that helps. Good luck.

20 odd years of pulling engines out of cars and you didnt know to unbolt the converter from the flexplate first??? you do realise if you did that, you would have got it out in no time...
@MrWilliamtomkinson
@MrWilliamtomkinson 3 жыл бұрын
you are correct, and i would have, except they dont have an inspection plate, nor can you access them via the starter hole. and even if you somehow manage to remove the converter, there is not enough room to slide the box back to even clear the locating pins let alone the other things. and thats assuming you can get to the 2 inaccessible bolts that hold the bellhousing to the diff. do you have any other usless smartass know it all advise for me, cause you have been so helpful sofar.

@@abitofeverything9970 i just went and looked again, just incase i missed it the first 100 times. (yes its still in the shed, untill this weekend when its going to scrap) so its on a engine crane at the moment. i does not have an inspection plate. it does have a vent type cover but it is only a small plate and opens directly to the back of the flywheel. i know that some do have an inspection plate, because i have replaced a mates when it fell off. what i am saying is mine does not have one. nor does it have anywhere that one would go. there is a steel plate that goes between the box and the motor, all the way around including the lower third where i have seen inspection plates in other cars, and in other xtrails. but on mine it is a one piece plate that you cant remove without spliting the engine and box

I am doing another one now (T31 Diesel manual) already done a diesel auto. Agree, it is a big job and engine or gearbox cannot be removed separately as there is no room between the frame rails. Transfer case may remain in place, but access improves if you remove it. Front frame must be removed and all the main loom connections. There are a number of cars where the engine and gearbox has to be removed downwards as a unit, not just a Nissan. Do yourself a favour and remove the bumper and front radiator support. No need to disconnect the condensor or aircon compressor just hang them aside for better access. Certainly not a job to do without a hoist, and engine crane and the right tools and expertise. Basically you lift the body up from the engine. Good luck with the reinstall, looks like you will need it!

I Hope i can get it done more painless than the swap you was doing 🤔 i do not have a hoist only a crane in the roof that is 1500 kg rated and a pallet thingy to do the lifting and lowering of the subframe assembly.. Bought the car cheap and same with replacement engine.. Around 800 doller in total invested ik the broken car and New engine.. And a running xtrail t30 2.2 dci 4x4 is close to 5000$ on the used marked in denmark :)

After 40 years of motoring with both motorbikes (2 and 4 strokes), and cars, I have had a lot of spark plug failures, always Champion. I always lean towards NGK. One of my G60's has a problem with number 5, oils up and blows smoke, replaced valve stem seals, good compression on all 6, all I can think is it is a faulty oil ring. As I have plenty of spares, it will be cheaper to just replace the engine. AUS
