I rallied one of these (white) with original wheels in Targa Tasmania 1993 with my mate and navigator/engineer John Spilsbury The Grosser was fast, very comfortable and handled beautifully. A joy to drive and steer, mainly with one hand. The 600 really moves. Occasionally brakes would overheat on long downhill sections which would slow us down a little (for 15 secs or so) approaching bends Only a few very fast cars would catch up to us in Targa stages during the five day rally. Exploded two near new Michelin tyres at the end of day four, which lost us a trophy (plate)

Spencer Martin as I recall was the man to beat in his BP Boomerang FX Holden (not sure but think linked to a service station on Concord Road ) I think my first Catalina race had Bob Jane in his Jag battling it out with Norm Beechy in his Impala with the gaggle of FX Holdens and Bruce McPhee’s lime green FE behind. Spencer mentioned Warren Weldon as his main rival along with Barry Seton and Des West. I wonder if he remembers Keith Burge a mate of Warren Weldon’s who drove a bright red FX with gold wheels. He was a carpenter that I happened to work with once. A bit of trivia on Warren Weldon who’s step sons are mates of my son. Apparently the offer to drive for the Holden Dealer Team was offered to him before Brock but he’d turned it down in loyalty to Studebaker Dealer Bert Needham. Warren Weldon passed away some years ago from prostate cancer. The mention of Max Stahl’s accident brought back memories I was right there to witness it. Max did a lot to promote car racing creating the magazine Racing Car News and he had a Saturday morning radio show on 2CH as well. I recall soon after his Catalina Park accident seeing him in the motor registry at Kogarah. He was blinking a lot as if it was an affliction ( maybe a result of the accident) Also was present across from the corner at the end of the straight to see Bob Jane’s Mustang crash. That was like something out of NASCAR before it ended flipping over the fence and starting a grass fire. Bob appeared to only have a bloodied elbow. The Daily Mirror’s front page featured a spectacular photo the following day. Listening to this video Spencer appears genuinely humble as he did when I by chance met him delivering concrete in his Ready Mix truck to a job site at the Menia Reactor. That was over fifty years ago when in my early twenties. He was surprised someone recognised him. He’d reached the top level of Australian racing. Driving for David McKay in the LM 250 Ferrari and the Repco Brabham Climax, Bob Jane’s lightweight E Type Jag in that classic race with Neil Allen and Kevin Bartlett. For anyone reading this you’ll find some memories on KZbin Bill’s Build and Race which I only discovered recently. Some best preserved race film that he took of that era. 👍

How fascinating, an old race track that still exists. Wouldn`t it be great to get it up and running again and get the old appendix J cars back out, Minis, Holdens and the like.

I had a 1967 250s...black with red interior...4 on the floor. Was a daily driver for a few years...even in winter. The heater was not quite up to par. Nice to look at but better driving.

We went to every meeting at this track, wet, dry and fogged in. Once arrived in the fog, sat all day in the fog and drove home 'in the fog.' Can remember Spencer and all the mob he spoke of. We spent a weekend in Katoomba in 1980 and I took my wife down to the circuit and surprisingly got onto the track. After doing a couple of laps to see where any shrubs were on the track I opened up, did one lap [ beautiful] then had to leave as anything making 'noise' down there could be heard for miles. 41 years ago the track was nowhere near as over grown as these clips show!

what is that tank next to the spare?
@helmuthhaass363110 ай бұрын
My 1969 600 did not have that tank. I wonder if it has something to do with the air conditioning system. My car had air conditioned flooring for driver and passenger. The overriders and the side indicator lamps on this car are American style. Original tyres were 185/15. My Grosser would use 18 liters/100kms. In Targa Tasmania we achieved speeds up to around 200kms on a couple of straight sections (during Targa stages only), showing 130mph on the speedo and a tad over 5000RPM. Suspension would 'sit lower' at high speeds and the car would feel rock solid on the road with no dramas whatsoever. The remote shock absorber pressure control turned the 600 into a 3ton GoKart.

Now if Mercedes went back to building them like this................ This car is almost not of this earth in it's cool and status factors. It's time for Maybach to try this again, maybe as an EV so it would sell.

You should keep it is original as possible! Let it detail and keep as much original parts as possible, most parts will live very long if in conditioned storage.

That’s a stunning car, but the headlights look different then the one I know. Are they aftermarket parts or something?
@bjornaltmann8184 Жыл бұрын
not aftermarket!.....That's the original much more beautiful European ones and not the modified ones for overseas markets like NSW 🙂
