Can the program find syntax issues? Specifically, I’m interested if pro writing aid scans the manuscript to make sure you are not beginning back to back sentences with the same word.
@KMRobinsonBooks
@KMRobinsonBooks Күн бұрын
None of them do that, but that's something you should absolutely be doing in your self edits BEFORE putting it through ProWritingAid and Grammarly. None of these programs replace human editors (yourself first and then a pro editor after) and are meant to catch things you miss, specifically after you've been through it personally but before you send it to your professional human editor.

@@KMRobinsonBooks gotcha. I’m not published, and I don’t have an editor. I’ve been considering Grammerly and pro writing aid to help speed along my edits. The biggest problem I currently have is the speed at which I can edit. Do you find this software helps with that?
@KMRobinsonBooks
@KMRobinsonBooks Күн бұрын
Software is not meant for helping to edit, but rather to catch what you miss. So it shouldn't be used during editing at all. During self edits, you're going though and restructuring sentences, finding plot holes, fixing grammar, etc. Trying to use software of any kind can double or triple the process of editing because every time you tweak something, the software has to rethink a bunch of it and even once you get to the end of your self edits, you still have to run it through a program again. Once your book is fully written, you should sit down and self edit it as quickly as possible (1-2 days is best, but if you need a week or two, do what you have to but if you stretch it out you'll end up missing a lot) Then run it through Grammarly and/or ProWritingAid, and then send it to a professional human editor. If this is your first book, and especially if you're struggling, you should strongly consider hiring a developmental editor to help with the structure of the book, then go through self editing and machine editing again before sending it to a line editor to deal with grammar and spelling issues.

@KMRobinsonBooks
@KMRobinsonBooks 11 күн бұрын
That was discussed in this and all the connected episodes. Public domain books are available for use, but only the public domain versions, not recent reprints. Additionally, the artwork has a separate copyright you have to deal with. It is best to check with a lawyer before using anything because there are a lot of moving parts even for things we believe are public domain.

I just published my first book and had a question about copyright. I know if somebody's reads my book on, say, TikTok without permission, that's against the law. But if I post a video with music in the background and an excerpt, is that ok?
@KMRobinsonBooks
@KMRobinsonBooks 20 күн бұрын
Who owns the copyright to your book? If you've self published, you can use it however you want. If you signed with a publisher, they own it and you have to ask permission to use it. Music is a different story. You have to properly license any music you use. You can not use any music without the proper licensure. Inside of the social apps (tiktok, KZbin, instagram, etc) they have a commercial use library. This is NOT the same as the trending music you hear on social. These are specific songs you're allowed to use for marketing because the app has licensed the songs on your behalf. You cannot use trending or popular music as you can be fined up to $150,000 per infraction for using that on your channel. Here's a video on the company I recommend licensing music from: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gl69k3yHgbWLeZo There's also tons of episodes on my main KZbin (with and without my lawyer) breaking down music and social media.
@zerocool1980

If a big bookstore returns a case of my books does ingramspark hold those to resell them to customers or are they going to send a case of books to my house?
@KMRobinsonBooks
@KMRobinsonBooks 22 күн бұрын
Returns are the author’s responsibility. You either chose to have Ingram destroy the books (you’re out the money) or you also pay for additional shipping to have them sent to you. Either way, you have to cover the cost of any returned book. The good news is that no one is buying a case of your books, at most it will be a handful of copies. The only people buying more than that are bookstores doing a signing with you or if they have a long track record of successfully selling copies of that specific book and they can’t keep it on the shelves (you’d have to be very social media famous for that)

I use Grammarly, but I am curious about ProWritingAid, so I think I'll give that a try. Off-topic, though, when I do finish my novel, I would like to hire a professional editor to go through it before I publish it. My problem will be trying to find someone I can trust and is not going to rip me off. You seem to be happy with your editor, so I was wondering if you could recommend an editor who is trustworthy and will do a good job with it. My novel is a coming-of-age story and will be well over 200,000 words when finished. Good job on the video. :)

Hi there! My editor isn’t taking on outside clients, but I would recommend going through Reedsy to find someone as there are some protections when you go through their site. I would also mention that you probably want a developmental editors before hiring a line editor. 200k is extremely high for a book (you should be looking at around 80k for an entire book) so you very well may want to turn it into a trilogy, or you’ll need to cut it back and a dev editor can help you curate it properly!

Interesting. What if you create an image using AI and after fixing it up to how you want it, you use it as you book cover. You upload that to Amazon KDP and tell them, YES, I used AI to create the cover. After filling in what program you had used, does Amazon then pass that information along to whomever owns that AI program? Better yet, rather than everyone ask questions due to Amazon being vague as to what it is doing, why doesn't Amazon make an in-depth video that explains everything?
@KMRobinsonBooks
@KMRobinsonBooks Ай бұрын
Right now the federal government says any AI, even if tweaked, is unable to be copyright protected. Currently if you use it, your cover has no protection so anyone can steal and use it. That could change with future litigation but it won't be for several years at least. Amazon doesn't require you to do anything but say yes/no I used ai. It's not gathering info. It's simply using it to inform readers if AI was used in conjunction with the book so readers who don't want it can avoid it.
@KMRobinsonBooks
@KMRobinsonBooks Ай бұрын
But additionally, Amazon has be SUPER clear. They're not being vague. People are asking questions because they're not getting the answers they like and they're hoping for different ones ;)
