I wish they would’ve did WHITE can’t travel with me when I was that small. Because I went blind at six months old in the hands of my birth mom. And I wish my father would allow my stepmom to let me do WHITE King training when I was little at that age. But thank goodness I got my first white cane after I graduated high school which was 18. And then six years later I had got my first Guide though. So I’ve been a white cane user and a Guide Dog Users for almost 30 years and I’m in my mid to late 50s.

Hello. I saw the reference to your video on FB. After watching, I wanted to comment. I'm a retired software developer, I'm low vision, and I'm also interested in math. I remember how painful it was sitting in math class in the 1960's before all the accessible technology. I'm aware math can be difficult, especially if you can't read the board and have difficulty reading a standard book. As I sit here in retirement, the thought occurred to me that perhaps I could put my skills to use to help improve math for blind/low vision students. Hopefully you'll see this reply. Some years ago I spoke with a student who told me (I was in Nebraska at the time) that the school wouldn't let her take her textbook home. She was low vision. I don't see how you can study math if you can't do that. The idea came to me to write software to allow the student to do the following ... 1. Enter a problem ... algebra, trig, calc ... into the app 2. The app edits the syntax and solves the problem ... showing all steps from start to finish 3. The output can be sent to a Braille device .. and the app allows the student to pan through a multi-line solution. Thus, if the student didn't have a book, but had the homework, they could try to solve their homework and use my app to check their work. And if they REALLY got stuck and just couldn't see how to get from start to end, they could use the app to show them the solution. Obviously the student wouldn't want to use this too much .. that is to get the answer and save himself the effort of doing the problem. They'd never learn the math. But if used as a tool, it could aid in helping the student do the work on his own when they got stuck. What I'm wondering is how useful you think this could be to a student, especially ones that know Braille? Just imagine being able to have the app solve the problem and send the output to a Braille device a line at a time .. and being able to pan back and forth to see the progression of steps. Now maybe this has all this been done already, and that's one reason I'm writing. At this point, I have the program editing syntax and performing a calculator function. It will give you a number for the answer. The next phase is to recognize the problem type and then solve it step by step, and allowing the student to pan through all the steps in the solution. This will not be trivial. But if this has already been done, it may not be worth continuing. I'm writing to find out what value you think such a program would be, and whether the assistive apps you've seen today tell you this has already been done and I'm just "reinventing the wheel" .. so to speak. If so, it may be time to stop work and move on to something else I want to do. Thanks so much for reading this reply. Incidentally, I sent you a FB friend request, so if you want to reply via FB that would be fine. Or you can reply via email. My email is [email protected]. I look forward to your response. Mike Jolls
