As a teenager I was always pleased when Pirmin Zurbriggen won. He was my favourite.

Der Fahrstil war früher schon sehr rustikal, was sicherlich auch an dem im Vergleich zu heute wesentlich schlechteren Material und den schlechten Pisten lag.

Downhill skiing, besides motorcycle racing, has to be the most dangerous sport one can imagine ... you ride down a near vertical ice plate at speeds of close to 130, 140 kilometers per hour, with no more protection than a helmet and your bare body .... those downhill skiers deserve the most respect in the whole world of sports, far more than any football or tennis player. These athletes are the real heroes!

Fun fact- Egon Zimmerman, winner of the 1964 Olympics, ending up marrying Penny Pitou (who was the silver medalist in the 1960 Olympics at Stowe). Their granddaughter is on the US Ski Team!

I had a pair of skis that were endorsed by Tony Sailor. I think they were Heads? The first ski race i can recall watching was the 1960 Olympics at Squaw Valley on TV. I had already been skiing. I wanted to do a downhill race after watching it.

Interestingly enough, no one has been able to capture the gold more than one time. Katja Seizinger is the only one who has done it in the women's class.
@EuropeSky4 жыл бұрын
Only two skiers have come close to repeating: Russi (who won silver in Sapporo as the only defending champion to medal) and Svindal (who missed gold in Vancouver by just 0.07). Seizinger was only the second skier of any gender to successfully defend an Olympic title - a legend of the sport despite retiring at 25.

@@biaginiandrea5663 Look at Didier Cuches final run. He borrowed dress and skies from the ski museum in Mürzzuschlag, and rode down the "Planai" in Schladming. OK, it was a GS, bit still cool to look at.
