East Coast D1 photographer here. Jaren you're awesome! Your R3 TFP videos really helped me up my sports game and get more shots on the floor for my editor. Not to mention your advice on the travel router when I started photographing huge games with tons of fans. Seriously, thank you for your videos! Wonder if you guys have a video on how to find and get in with wire services?

Greetings from the UK. My R1 arrived 2 days ago and came across your channel (now subscribed) while searching for set up info. This is a great video, thanks. I’ve not had time to check out your other vids yet, but have you done anything on basic set up?

Jersey priority AF would be so useful and seems like such a no brainer

FTP is inherently insecure. It is generally frowned upon because everything is transmitted in clear text. If the images or account is sensitive, we should not use FTP. HTTPS is better because everything is encrypted end to end. There are encrypted alternatives to FTP.

I suspect Canon chose not to go with the version 4.0 because twice the data rate would make the camera overheat
@fredingham185510 күн бұрын
Hi, I am curious if you have used Action Priority for hours at a time over a period, say, several basketball games (or soccer, volleyball). In my experience, after a period of time, the R1 and R5II stop focusing altogether, and I have to remove the battery for some time and restart the cameras. I initially thought there could be something wrong with my 100-300 f2.8 or 24-105 f2.8 RF lenses, but when I did not use Action Priority, I did not have any focusing issues, even after thousands of photos and hours of use. I am up to date with all of the camera/lens firmware. I have talked with several other Canon photographers who have also had this issue. I am certain Canon will fix the firmware over time, but given the audience that these cameras are targeted for, Action Priority is not a replacement for a photographer's skill in tracking action and making editorial choices on whom to focus on.

Just found your channel, and it may be the best sports photography channel out there! Great video! This is exactly how you do it! It was also fun seeing Mark Pope and Jaxson Robinson in this since that's who I'm getting to photograph this season at Kentucky.

1:18 is exactly how I feel when I take out the EF 11-24mm lol. I'm going to have to upgrade to the RF just for the weight and size difference.

The more I watch these videos the more I use my R1 with more confidence. Simply love this camera. Hope Canon expands action priority mode sports like ice hockey and lacrosse.

Thank you for this video! At your recommendation, I purchased a 1 TB Lexar Gold Type B 4.0 that has a sustained write speed of 3 GB/s. I probably would have purchased the 512 GB card, but it's backordered until the end of January and there was no way I was going to wait that long! My R1 is scheduled to be delivered on Monday! Thanks again!

Canon CEO and design/implementation technicians, are you listening? This is early invaluable feedback. And when the problems pointed out are meticulously studied and resolved, please don't charge your customers for firmware update. It seems Japanese major international companies are going the way of American international companies: every business transaction, no matter reason, is an unnecessary fee or cost passed on to consumers. Business is about is about more profit in a failing business world. Greed for profit and cheap labor are ruling the day. And who's benefitting the most from excessive greed? CEOs and their Department Heads of course. And, yes, please pardon my rant at the end. This was very good advice to Canon and for new owners of the R1.

I think free firmware updates are a powerful signal that you are committed to your customers and that you are standing behind your product. It is an investment in an ongoing relationship with your customers.

It's a 24 megapixel camera which can shoot up to 6-7 seconds before the buffer fills up with the new Cfexpress 4.0 format. Nothing special here.
@JohnSwen-p6b13 күн бұрын
At 40 fps in my test using the fastest v4. cards I was able to shoot 10 seconds full RAW with pre-capture enabled, which is ~380 to 400 frames. At 20 fps the buffer is limitless.
@SamW60413 күн бұрын
Excellent information and insight. Thank you.
@4KLive13 күн бұрын
In the past the camera ( say1DX3) seems to be writing to the card while shooting and store the files they were waiting to transfer in the buffer. From your test seems like the cpu is not fast enough to transfer the files while taking photos. so bad a faster card do not make the buffer fill up later. you idea regarding the auto/adjustable FPS reduction and color indication of buffer status is great. I believe if they are able to just indicate it by change the color of the remaining frame numbers will help.

But Canon says it very clear in the manual of R1 “*CFExpress 2.0 and VPG400 supported” (pg 1114, c018.pdf). It’s like a F1 car runs a 80kmh, it’s not faster than any other vehicle running at 80kmh. Only hope a firmware update to get CFExpress 4.0’s speed.
@mikede246413 күн бұрын
That's a fantastic idea re: the colored border when approaching buffer limits.
@tonygerassi150213 күн бұрын
So basically it doesn’t matter if you use CFA or CFB, every camera is now basically handicapped by the image processing pipe line from the buffer. At 25MB x 20 = 500 MB/s At 45MB x 15 = 675 MB/s So anyone who says Sony is handicapped by using CFA is just as handicapped using CFB and 4.0 is useless for the camera. Workflow and getting images off the camera is a different story but as far as cameras go, it doesn’t matter. Also you mentioned the ability of setting your buffer rate, that is how Sony does it. Once the buffer is filled it just slows down to a slower speed until you give it a chance to finish flushing which will then allow full fps again
@DarrylDavy13 күн бұрын
May I ask - is there any performance bottleneck from writing to both cards simultaneously?
@adamx12m14 күн бұрын
Buying v4 cards is kind of future proofing, nice jobs on the speed comparisons. The buffering indicator could be something like that of F1 driver steering wheels lights indicating RPM, gets to red time to shift.
@4KLive13 күн бұрын
I would not mind it showing me bigger red spot on the screen when it is nearly full haha
@JohnSwen-p6b14 күн бұрын
Thank you for the test. In my R1 buffer test, writing sequentially to cards I found that the buffer at 40 fps with pre-capture engaged was ~380 frames or ~10 seconds using Prograde Cobalt 1.3 TB v4.0 cards. At 20 fps I found the buffer basically limitless for any real world scenario (held the shutter release down for 30 seconds and the R1 never slowed down). The above results are in full RAW not cRAW. I set the camera to default to 20 fps and then use the AF-ON button half-press to trigger 40 fps when necessary.

That was awesome! I've been going back and forth on what to use for my second camera body. For sports and wildlife in inclement weather not wanting to change lenses. We have the R1... second R1 or R5 mark2. 24 vs 45 megapixels really, everything else on the R1 fits. Tricky decision, if you had just 2 camera bodies would you want an R5 Mk2 for half time shots etc or would you stick with the R1 on both? Thanks :)

Nice! Duade Paton done a video comparing Canon, Sony and a Nikon and he too concluded their needs to be configurable options as to what happens when the buffer is full. I like your idea of the visual colour too (again, user configurable too) Shooting craw for sure helps!
@JohnSwen-p6b13 күн бұрын
cRAW would definitely improve the buffer, but can limit shadow recovery. If you lower the fps to 20 fps (which is good for the vast majority of photography) the buffer is basically limitless in full RAW>.

Am contemplating getting an R1 and was wondering exactly this about the memory cards as I already have a bunch from my R5 and C300mk3. Knowing I won't really see a speed bump means I can hang tough and wait for one of the cfexpress 4.0 cards to go on special and pick them up then. I've been through so many articles and videos trying to get the exact info you laid out in barely 5 mins. The benefit on the ingest side is definitely something to consider alright. I got stuck with replacing my computer just before everything switched from usb2 to usb3, and once camera file sizes got bigger (and video especially became a thing), the differences in download speeds became painful (I had to buy firewire 800 drives to have any speed at all). Really enjoy your videos. Hope you and yours have a healthy and happy holiday season.

Can you put remotes on both cameras so you’re always firing your remote? I get how if you’re shooting long on the other side maybe that wouldn’t be ideal but if it prevents you from missing these super important shots might be worth the extra culling.
