Thomas was the prodigal son here, accepted by his family after fleeing. Ellie represents the elder sibling, upset at feeling neglected by the father while the prodigal son gets a second chance, but she is promised "all that her father hath".

I actually hung around with a gal like this. She put me in alot of awkward, sometimes dangerous situations, but i didn't have much friends at the time and she was too entertaining. After I moved out of my home state, I later found out from a friend that she had a crush on me xD So this scene kind of hits home with me.
