The part that absolutely sucks is that as mind bogglingly incredible the book is, AppleTV completely shat the bed and made such a shit show out of Shantaram that I could barely watch even 2 episodes of it. After having read the book I was so stoked about the show but my goodness that was such garbage. Ugg!!

When I first read the book I could not put it down. I hoped someone would make it into a movie. I'd heard Johnny Depp had some interest in doing so. Imagine my thrill when it finally happened in an even better form!!! 🕌🥻

Read through this a few days ago. Easily one of the best books I ever read. Some of the experiences in that book had to be real - or he wouldnt be able to describe them the way he did. It’s a masterpiece.. prabaker was my favorite character. I recognize him in some of the Indian people I’ve met.
@nurgul68163 жыл бұрын
I feel like this is an autobiography rather than fiction. Probably the author simply can’t accept it publicly due to amount of crimes he had committed. Nevertheless the novel is a masterpiece.

Madonna and Sean Penn are the two worst people I have ever met in my life. I waited tables at the Ivy and The Ivy at the Shore. I would say that close to 70% plus of our customers were some how involved in the film, TV or music business so I interacted (waited on them) with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and the music business. The majority of them were super nice people. I cannot say this about Sean and Madonna. I was their waiter on two occasions and they were horribly rude people to the entire staff and very rude to each other too. They are total POS. Everything he says about Madonna does not apply to people who she deems to be less than her...such as restaurant staff, even at 5 star restaurants.

Shantaram. This is a real Bollywood film of a book. Written as if shot in 900-page wide-screen, it is opulently orchestrated, a whopper of a story, besotted with love and rhythm and violence, brimming with colour, humour, drugs and spice, also teeming with the warmest, strangest, magicaly fated human encounters. The tale is quite literally a "movie", its narrator (and author) being an ex-convict who fled Australia via new Zealand to work for the Indian Mafia anywhere between Kinshasa and Kandahar, but based in and thoroughly enchanted by the Metropolis of Bombay. Here the story is squarely placed on the city's shady or squalid side. Though packed with action, this is also a look behind the mirror. The author is something of a stream-of-consciousness poet, a loquacious enthusiast with a penchant for hippy philosophy, also romanticising what should be an outrage. Even so, after ever so much flower power he never fails to turn a phrase so deftly, that any self-respecting singer-songwriter would want to steal just that. To give thanks to this author I now need to learn the Indian-style head-wiggle. I should also thank the Australian and Indian penitentiary systems for not quite killing him off.

So interesting how he speaks of Madonna. To put it lightly, I find both Gregory David Roberts and Madonna inspiring in the way they've lived their lives, made mistakes they do not apologize for as it's part of life to make mistakes, have such open minds to see people for who they truly are, wisdom to know what's in people's hearts, and ultimately how they want to make the world a better place. Both have gone through so much in life. I have the utmost respect for both in how they've lived their lives. In my life, I've only ever personally known 2 dear friends I've deeply respected that gave me such great inspiration at the same time. To listen to and watch others from afar give me those similar feelings and more, is incredibly thrilling and heart warming all at the same time. <3

To write a book like Shantaram..one has to be kind, to have a big heart and an open spirit. That's why linbaba survived through it all. Those who point fingers at his criminal life are kidding themselves. They would do much more for much less. You Mr. Roberts always inspire me.
