Teflon tape from the hardware store does not work for the bearing edge on timpani. It is not adhesive on one side. Adhesive Teflon tape is available at Steve Weiss Music.

This is pretty good but you still at like every other video I've seen on Tiffany had changes and clearing, damn spell check I'm not going to resell Tiffany I'm going to leave. What you all fail to do is tell us how to adjust the tension spring with the head off and the blocks under the towel, where should the tension be on the tension knob? You've got to figure certainly in a school in the environment, that kids have been messing with the tension knob thinking it does one thing when it actually does another or not knowing what it's for. It's a shame but it does happen, That is why we need to know how do we know the tension spring is at the optimal position before we move the temperature put a new head on or do anything with it? No one ever mentioned this they just say if the pedal sticks to the top go counterclockwise if the pedal stays at the heel down, then go clockwise a few turns, I've heard five or six full turns, I've heard just a few half turns, well it's going to be as many times as you need What if you start with the knob has been already all the wayclockwise, and if it goes all the way clockwise is that when it pops out?, or does it pop up when you go all the clockwise with the tension. How can we know if it's turned into the mid position if that's the indeed where it should be when we start out with a new head? They're absolutely must be a clear and concise answer because at some point the Tiffany are brand new at the factory with no head on them yet, what did they do with the factory, how do they set the tension knob so that it is in the correct position to accept a brand new head for the very first time?

Just discovered this (1st October 2023 Australia).👍👍 I spent a considerable time as an Army percussionist (Mainly drums) I've read the expression "Untimed rolls" for Timpani. Have noticed a number of timp players do a little "rush" to finish a roll on their favored hand. A difficulty I have encountered from time to time is playing a roll under a pause and trying to cut off with the conductor. Sometimes got a little lost as to where my hands were at. One orchestral drummer suggested I think triplets, thus avoiding any unbalanced sound in the roll. 'Thievish Magpie' comes to mind I pretty much play a roll the way you do. A lot of of extra pressure on high volume as you said, and slower agitation at low volumes. I have never really gone into the rhythmic groupings the way you have demonstrated. I tend to tense up at times on certain rolls even though I produce a pretty good sound. I'll be back to check out more of your stuff.🥁

Roll bases can be tricky to determine. There are lots of good theories out there. If it sounds, looks, and feels good, it's a winner!

Absolutely the best video on buzz rolls anywhere! Thank you. Could you do one on double stroke rolls? I am having a lot of trouble playing ‘O Canada’. In one MuseScore version there are 64th note rolls for 1 and 1 1/2 and 2 beats, so 16, 24, and 32 hits. I can’t come anywhere near this, but would like to know the correct technique to learn slow and work up to say 104 bpm. Thanks in advance, love this channel.

Wow, thanks! Glad you like it. Yes, there is a double-stroke (open) roll script in the works. Not sure when that'll come out. For now, happy rolling!

Hi there. Years ago I was in a band close to an American Army Band when they played their National Anthem. Because the tune is not in strict tempo the open rolls did not sound good at all. The 'blend' was all over the place. Maybe some drummers were playing faster/slower than the next guy. My opinion was it would have sounded much better if they had all played closed rolls.🥁
