This video is very useful so far. I'm not sure if anyone's pointed it out yet, but I think there's a small error I noticed with the IPA symbols. The phones you're using to represent the 'r' sounds for CJK are a bit off. /ɹ/ represents the rhotic 'r' in English. So it isn't the sound in Japanese. That would be more like the /ɾ/ (if we're not being too narrow). Korean should probably be /ɽ/ since it's retroflex, but that could also be a tap /ɾ/ too I guess.

I’ve been learning Japanese for about a year now, and I always wondered if getting to know more Kanji would make it easier to learn Chinese as well - since the characters were originally adapted from Chinese. This answers my question and makes me want to learn the other languages as well. Super excited to dive into these videos! Thank you ☺️

Ya'll really speaking these 3 languages in addition to English, huh? Edit: I'm learning Japanese, but I'm jealous of hangul. It really seems like a beautiful system, and seems like it'd fix my issues with kanji. I suppose you could just write in hiragana/katakana in theory, maybe with spaces or other ways to detect word boundaries, but I guess it's just really not done.

I don't understand why you're not including Vietnamese. "CJKV" has its own Wiktionary entry. en.wiktionary.org/wiki/CJKV

When/why does 8 mean all around, all sides? I'm thinking some kind of religious origin - like how lots of Buddhist terms find their way into common expression. But no examples come to find instantly for 八.

這樣比較三種語言是無意義的。應該用中古漢語相關的語言如廣東話、客語、閩南語才能有關連性。現代漢語的普通話和日韓語關連性不大。尤其是閩南語和日語的音讀音有對應的規則。比如閩南語的子音發ㄍㄎㄏ對應日語音讀音か行,‘’海‘’字在閩南語讀作hai在日語音讀音為kai,‘’漢‘’字在閩南語讀作han在日語讀作kan。

I did the same research as yours and had similar outcome back in my college period. It would be lovely if we can discuss over this. For the vowel part, I think Korean is more predictable. This is because Japanese only has 5 vowels and there are more vowels in Middle Chinese. Originally, there were 8 vowels in middle Japanese, they somehow merged to the current 5 vowels.

It's so sad that simplified Chinese is the popular form of Chinese

these languages are not related 💀 there are obviously many similarities because they evolved in such close proximity but they don't have a common ancestor
@freemanol

Grammatically yes. But in terms of vocabulary, japanese and korean have 60~70% chinese words. It's more obvious if you know a Southern chinese dialect like Hakka, Cantonese or Hokkien, which preserves the middle Chinese pronunciation from 1000 years ago. To say that they're unrelated is an uninformed opinion.

not having a common ancestor does not imply that the languages are not related.
@pelep1509
@pelep1509 9 күн бұрын
@@quasistarsupernova that is exactly what that implies. the linguistic definition of relation is just a specific sense of how we understand relation in general.

@@pelep1509 I was ignorant of the linguistic definition of the word "relation," and was using the form that is used in a casual conversation; however, I apologise and thank you for elucidating the matter for me.
