So, under emergency braking it is better to slam the back brake and squeeze the front. Yes?
@RideEarth114 күн бұрын
Yes. Especially on modern bikes with ABS. Stop mucking about. Don't bother thinking about it. Just do it! Slam the back and get your bike stopping. Now squeeze the front gradually and as hard as you can until you stop. Slam and squeeze. I recall a dirt country road where I had not seen the intersection and needed to stop very quickly. Too much worry about hitting the brakes too quick on the dirt and falling, which lead to me missing the intersection stop, luckily no vehicles. I would have been much better off to just slam the back, even without ABS, it's okay to slide the back, you got it started, now focus on the front and squeeze that bastard as hard as you can. Go and practice on some dirt or grass somewhere. Learn to feel comfortable hitting that back and feeling any slide or change. Get used to how the bike feels doing that. Then go for the squeeze. These steps are done in very quick sequence, we're not talking about more than a second between them. You've slammed the back on the dirt, the back tyre is starting to gather dirt under it, the weight of the bike is moving onto the front tyre, the front tyre is now in a prime position to take some braking and more weight, then you can squeeze the hell out if it and the front tyre will have so much traction that it won't go anywhere but stop.

Just bought an adv bike recently. Haven't ridden it much because of an injury but will start heavy in 2025. I know, I KNOW, I'm going to drop mine, and when I do I just hope I have the same attitude about it as you...laugh, pick it up, learn the lesson, laugh some more. Kudos to you brother.
@RideEarth114 күн бұрын
Do the training. Practice. Take your time. Once you learn the tricks the big bike will be a cinch and just like any other bike. I prefer the bigger bike, I find it much more stable, comfortable and more controllable than a light bike that can easily be thrown off by a rock, or wind or a slide or bump. With the big bike just focus on keeping your balance and let the bike do the work. Using your feet on the pegs to move weight around is all you really need to focus on. And more importantly look out for any inclining surfaces and be ready to put your foot down on the upper side. Often when you drop it out bush or odd terrain is you lean the bike to the lower side, loose your footing and it goes down.

I prefer the middle line too, especially on these mountain roads, the outside edge is often broken and uneven
@RideEarth13 ай бұрын
Yeah... after years of riding I'm not sure I agree with trainers that talk about choosing your line and moving from one edge to the other... I don't think that's safe at all, and I think that's something for the track, not the road. The road lane is not that wide and you only need a small tyre error on either side of the lane to slide off a bit of dirt on the edge or a slippery white line or marker. Given how narrow your lane is, and it is no way close to the wide width of a track, I don't think you should bother with the line you take, rather, how about sticking to the middle of the road and using that as a guide if you're going too hard and if you have any control at all. As soon as I find myself not sticking to the middle I know I have to correct my steering with some quick counter steering or change my speed or apply my brake... I have found it keeps me safe when I use that as a guide, and if a vehicle happens to run off their lane, I'm in a good position to counter their move. I think the problem with people having accidents is their lack of ability to move quickly out of the way or make a correction, they freeze up and then head right for the obstacle. Sticking to the middle is like constantly practising your agileness by keeping away from either edge of the lane as if they were big clumsy trucks. So I say, practise riding your bike in a controlled manner on the tight rope of the middle of your lane and leave mucking about with which line to take when you're on the track and sliding off the edge is not going to leave you under a truck or kissing a tree, rather just rubbing your balls in a bit of dirt, and the track ambulance lady can help you with that.

@@RideEarth1 my instructors taught "SWIFT": Start Wide Intend To Finish Tight but I quickly learnt that it was mostly irrelevant
@RideEarth13 ай бұрын
@@NicksBikes Yes. When the space you have to work with is not much more than an arms width, what does it matter!!? You only need to worry about SWIFT if your goal is maximum speed and that should not be your goal on the road. SML FML. I say Start Middle Line and Finish Middle Line, and if you can't do that, you need to practice better control of your bike, otherwise something else might reinforce your lack of control. The only time I've had to avoid a middle line, is an obvious spill or mess on the road, but there's not much of that as vehicles usually clean it up.

It's funny that all the time you thought you were "heading to the Acheron Way" you were actually on it! lol Didn't you see the large sign at the start saying Acheron Way? Anyway, it's a great ride for motorcyclists like you or e-MTB tourers like me but, with all the 'blind bends', care must be taken. Where your vid finishes, at the intersection near Rainforest Walk, is the end (going UP), or start (going DOWN) the Acheron Way. The r-h bitumen road goes up to the summit and lookout tower of Mt Donna Buang while continuing on the road ahead takes you down into the township of Warburton. @@RideEarth1 ... I really did enjoy your Video. You mentioned in your vid that Acheron Way is a great dirt road close to Healesville. And it is! If you live near Healesville and want a nice circuit, ride over the Black Spur, then UP the Acheron Way (like last time). Take a detour to the summit of Mt Donna Buang and climb the tower, the view is fabulous. Then ride back down into Warburton (fast downhill bitumen, but treacherous if wet) and along the highway to Don Rd at Launching Place. Turn onto Don Rd, which will take you all the way up over the range and then down into Healesville. Don Rd is almost all bitumen, except for a short but very potholed dirt stretch near the top (beyond the old bridge). Or, if you don't mind riding downhill on gravel, do this circuit in reverse. Anyway, I'll be looking out for more of your ride vids. 🙂Cya

@@ADISBURZIC GS! Definitely. Even a second hand one will do. Go for any model after they introduced cruise control, which I think was 2013. May cost a little more but you won't have any regrets and you won't be left wondering about that bike you didn't get, which is what I do when I think about a sports road bike and think of a Ducati sports or when I'm on a very long straight road in the middle of hot Australia and think about a big fat Harley. GS will do all of those though and more.

@@RideEarth1 I've had sport bikes my whole life. From gsxr 1000s, to Hayabusa, zx14r and over it. I will *never* get rid of my breakout. Having said that, I've never ridden a GS, are they really all that? Don't mean that in a rude way. Wouldn't be interested in anything older than a 2020.. If a good 2019 came round I wouldn't say no... Which is why I'm leaning towards a budget bike (TRK 502X) to see if I'd like it before I go dump 30k on something I know nothing about... Love to hear what U think given you've had one for 5, 6 years atleast
@RideEarth1 Жыл бұрын
@@ADISBURZIC I was a motorcycle courier in the 90s and had my fair share of different bikes in different conditions. Don't worry about going older on a GS, they age well and owners look after them. In the GS, I've raced Kawasakis through mountains, cruised with Harleys and trailed with Yamahas... I know I'm sitting more comfortably than the Kawasaki, able to adjust my cruising position more than a Harley and can climb rocky dirt climbs more steadily and controllably than a Yamaha. I don't think you'll experience any of that with a TRK. And if you're worried about dropping it, don't, just go the GS rather than the GSA, get some training, get some crash bars and join the rest of us that have dropped and picked up GSs more than we can count and have come out unscathed, both bike and rider!
