I’ll miss Joy but wish her well in her new role. I really enjoyed Craig’s online course “Reading Biblical Literature”. He is a wonderful teacher which, as a non specialist learner, I really appreciated.

Honestly…as I listen to this….Psalm 29th reference to the voice of the Lord “flashing forth in flames of fire” it doesn’t seem a “summer” thunderstorm y psalm at all…where is God in all of it? For sure in the midst of it…..

Wonderful to listen to... Baptism of the Lord Sunday, and all the things I've seen about remembrances of our baptism on this week.... and the scriptures for the week - aren't really about baptism! :) Talk about people having an expectation, but getting something different.... LOL (I'm not criticizing - I truly do appreciate it, because that was my thinking I was having - it's not about baptism.)

Love however, takes time, John is about relationships, and the Love that comes from Jesus is built through the building up of relationships, which takes time. ...just a thaught.

Hi, @cathiparish6653! Thank you for your comment. :) We weren't able to get a recording this year, but take a look at this recording from 2022: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYC9eGB-edmEm6s. You can also follow along with updated commentaries at www.workingpreacher.org/commentaries/revised-common-lectionary/epiphany-of-our-lord/commentary-on-matthew-21-12-14. Thank you, Preacher!

Matt's points @15:39 to @16:24 around Hannah from 1 Samuel unfortunately dismisses there is "no guarantee" that a child will make it to 2 or 12 years as well in our society given the prevalence of violence that infects our broken world.

I was once told by a senior colleague that on Christmas and Easter, I don't need to preach the story- it preaches itself. My only roles are to 1) help people be in a space to hear it and 2) get out of the way.

Connected to your three fold collapse of time point, Matt: this from SALT project: Bernard of Clairvaux, the twelfth-century abbot and theologian, wrote eloquently of “three Advents”: first of all, the Incarnation, the Advent at Christmas; and last of all, the Parousia, the Advent at the end of the age (Luke’s subject in this week’s passage). And the second or “middle” Advent, says Bernard, the one in between these other two, is the everyday arrival of Jesus: the knock at the door, the still small voice, the lonely prisoner, the hungry mother, the weary refugee, the migrant worker, the asylum seeker. In other words, Jesus is coming again and again, like a thousand spring buds on a fig tree long thought dead. So be alert - lamps lit and dressed for action.

This conversation was beneficial when crafting my sermon this week. I am focusing my sermon on Daniel and John's texts and offering the choice between the Kingdom of this nation and the Kin-dom of God. My sermon isn't going to be a happy narrative but a call to action for people to choose Christ over the temporary comforts the kingdoms of this world provides.

I don’t get why Hebrews 11-12 doesn’t make it in the lectionary EVER! I’ve contemplated using some portion of it on All Saints Sunday, but couldn’t figure out this year how to condense it a bit. I’m going to work on that for the next All Saints year B, as I was thinking along the same lines as Matt’s comment about incompleteness.

Writing post election. Jesus did not only call us to love our enemies, but to stand with the vulnerable, the oppressed, the victims of self-righteousness religious people. Loving those who voted for one who promises to afflict horrendous suffering on anyone he doesn't like does not mean that our call to prophetic witness is excused.
