To be honest, the reality of it all was that fascism started because either 1) they pretty much got dumped on (Italy) on the negotiating table despite being part of the 'winning side' or 2) the winners went out of their way to ensure it (Germany). France wanted Germany *_DESTROYED_* while Britain's leadership (outside *_CHURCHILL_* of all people, he was like 'hey, this is *_NOT_* going to fix anything! Stop making it worse for Germany, you idiots!' (note, I'm largely paraphrasing here)) wanted Germany taken down several dozen pegs because Germany had the *_GAUL_* to replace Britain as the center of industry, science, and economy in Europe (if not the world, jockeying for that position against the US) despite not being a 'real' colonial power.
