I think scenes like these are important in the Injustice universe, Clark is often seen as a cold, relentless and bloodthirsty individual to the point where you can't really take him seriously anymore. Some of the actions he commits are just comically evil for the sake of being evil, no matter the context or history he's had. It's good development to show that deep down, he's just a man who had lost everything.
