My favourite aircraft. I saw one go straight up from takeoff at Luchers when I was a boy. The roar, the glow of the afterburners, the rollout at the top. It’s like I saw it yesterday.

This was a great helicopter !!! If the rotors were well balanced and more importantly if the rotor blades were well tracked, she was a 140knot aircraft, which for a 1960's aircraft was really flying !!!

Given that no other ship-borne helicopters of that era (or since) deployed a similar landing gear, you have to wonder if they over-engineered the four wheel configuration. But I'm glad they designed it as they did, as for me the Wasp will always be the most beautiful helicopter in the world.

Great little jet! Fun and easy to fly. A friend in the upstate of South Carolina, US, has one and flew it down to Charleston one weekend. He let me work it out for an hour or so. Great fun!
