I just saw it today. I noticed a lot of elements from previous films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. There was a distinct difference in the background painting. It looked very surreal. Miyasaki may have been going for that intentionally. A great film overall though.

I shall be lining up to see this in New Zealand after the 7th December, and hope to be able to purchase it on dvd asap. His films always give me a sense of wonder and hope while I lose myself in the beauty of his art and vision.

I’m just back from seeing it . I take nothing away from the true story aspect and admittedly I knew most anyway. However…… myself & son ,both serious movie buffs,were bitterly disappointed! The length was not a problem for us,we had luxury reclining seats & plenty luxury food,here goes….. acting 9/10, no problem there,special effects budget 2/10 (you get one glimpse of the massive amount of mini oil rigs which are of course the crux of the story & never to be seen again), realism 3/10, I felt most of the scenes were shot at one of those tourist western towns you can visit whilst on holiday,you know , to see a Wild West show or something sickly tourist-like ! Everything always seemed so sparkly clean,which I’m sure was certainly not the case in those days(similarly for next comment), make up/wardrobe etc 1/10 , C’mon ffs, every time any of the main actors appeared their hair was PERFECT, Teeth….I needed sunglasses on to handle their smile,they obviously had FANTASTIC dentists round every corner in those days lol. Ok folks,hope you get the drift,I could go on & on,unbelievably disappointed & I’m off to watch “Deadwood” once again to get my faith restored in westerns(yes I know it wasn’t strictly a western), oh and by the way-I didn’t know people were so posh in those days either,from drunks to murderers-not one person swore lol. Deadwood is filthy,the language is filthy and had they done a better job of their Native American Indian it would have been even better,this- unrealistic well acted mince .
