You were so concerned about the condition of the comic book that you let a barn yard animal tromple all over it. WTF?

Half way through the video i was wondering, "man, as active as that cat is, I wonder if he ever knocks things off working surfaces..." Didn't have long to get the answer 😅
@ShelbysComics12 күн бұрын
I was completely my fault. I know he likes to jump up on things and it was near the edge of the table. He jumped on top of the container and is slid off the edge. It happens with such an active kitty.

I liked that you listened to the book during dry cleaning and continued with the eraser crumbs before disassembling. After Jack's investigation incident I recommend using a wet sponge, versus open water, in the humidity chamber. This is from personal experience where I was the one who splashed water on a comic, and ended up adding a few extra pressing sessions for my trouble. I have also had stains unexpectedly appear on the cover/insert pages that I did not visually see before pressing - cold or hot - and appreciated the diffusion. Thank you for showing your process in the video.

I agree and moving to a wet cloth or as you suggest, a wet sponge.

Jack is being awfully cute. Good thing it wasn’t AF #15 lol. The color loss is a shame but can’t see it in the camera. Things that happen are usually Jack-related lol Thanks for the lesson on diffusion. That’s always on my mind when I wash covers and such. Well done on this book.

Great work as always! Have you had much luck selling conserved comics? Do you get them graded first?

Do not get graded first and they sell fine. No complaints from anyone.

Nicely done, as always. I like seeing effort given to lower grade and less popular books.

The Joker story in the Batman Golden Story Teller Record Comic (not Power) is a reprint from 1952 (BM #73). You have about half of the Spire Barney Bear issues there; more than 50 different Spire comics titles were published (not including the later printing variants). Barbour later reprinted many.

The Johnny Cash one is really cool. He came to Salem in the 70’s to visit some relatives in Essex Street and there’s a photo of him standing by the house with a bunch of people. Towards the end my heart dropped at the sight of ASM 300, FF48, and the Batman silver age.

If the eraser crumbs brought back luster does that imply that there was some kind of residue from the wet cleaning on the surface of the book that the crumbs cleaned off? Thank you for conserving a well loved book.
@ShelbysComics17 күн бұрын
No, not at all. It is more likely the wet clean had removed oils that bind the dirt and the erasers were able to lift that grime.
@michaelmayrend31317 күн бұрын

Interesting to see you let the wheat paste air dry a bit before resandwiching it between hollytex and then pressing it again. I just had an incident with wheat paste that I applied too thick and that stuck to the Hollytex during my press causing some paper to be removed when I slowly removed the Hollytex with my spatula. I might have to do it this way now.

Yes, that is why I let it dry for about 10 mins. You can put SRP on it and pres it if you like

Looks great! Are you ever concerned about introducing tide lines or uneven seams by applying seals on dry pages? Do you work on dry pages because you find it easier to control?
@ShelbysComics26 күн бұрын
Depends on the paper. I only do dry seals on interior pages and if not too tanned, then no issue with tide lines. You may not be able to tell, but I did get tidelines on the inside front cover from doing mending job. This was a first for me, but his book was more of a chore than I expected.
@Adrift.26 күн бұрын
@ShelbyComics Well as you pointed out, it's a black cover/silver age, so it was bound to be tricky. I wonder if keeping the top Hollytex sheet would have prevented the finger print. How long did you keep it in the bath for? I'm working on a Silver Age Dell, and I only kept the book in for 3 minutes because I could see a little ink coming up. Hoping that it was long enough to clean it and impart the calcium hydroxide.

Very nice results- good idea on using the hanger - I have been using a wooden dowel similarly- saw Jerry using one to form a bend and it’s effective too. Keep up the great work- I have watched all of your videos
@ShelbysComics26 күн бұрын
Here is the issue with wooden dowels - they are NOT pressure treated. Thus, they could swell and leak out moisture in the wood when heated and come in contact with moisture. In fact, they are made to swell because they are used in insert into wood to provide reinforcement. That is why I use smooth plastic.
@doncarter946726 күн бұрын
Thanks Shelby, I will be on the lookout for that. I have not had any issues.

You might have mentioned it in a previous video, but i love the tip on using a hanger to help create the fold. Very useful to know. Are you ever concerned with creating a hump in the front cover doing that, or does it all flatten out in the final press (I'm assuming so, as it looks great)?
@ShelbysComics28 күн бұрын
Glad it was helpful! and yes, flattens out in final press. I was concerned in the beginning lol

The rinse water looked yellow to the camera. I am glad to see it was mostly tanning. I would have like to have seen the shape of the book spine after you took it off the hanger. Just curious to the shape that resulted. More treats.

I am working on a better process currently, but I will show more details in a future video. Thanks for suggestion.

Great results on reinforcing the spine and tears! DC SA are indeed difficult to work on. I ruined a few in the past with ink loss, including a Detective Comics #359 and Lois Lane #1, among others, which I still cry about. I’m more careful now. No more than 2 min on average in the CaOH2 bath. Just enough to introduce alkalinity and remove some acid.
@Adrift.28 күн бұрын
And that would be without surfactant, correct?
@ShelbysComics28 күн бұрын
Correct, I try to keep SA to only 1 bath. If you use surfactant, you have to do 2 baths.

The light breaks the peroxide down into water in the clear bottle. If the peroxide and blue light work as hoped the stain partially bleached and partially evaporated. Were the inside pages really that tan? For cutting those rolls of fabric, get one of the roller/wheel fabric cutters. Nice explanations. Jack - "I will not be ignored. You have taught me that maximum attention is to be paid to whatever objects are within the square target area."
