Always keep the drag loose. Then, when you go to set the hook put ur hang tight on the spool set the hook and let off. And let it run all it wants. Also stop reeling keep tention on rod tip. Dont reel until it stops running or it runs at you. Otherwise keep tention on rod tip, And you will stop losing them. I had to loose a lot of fish to learn this lol.

I have fished Kokanee for 40 years,big Kokanee,small Kokanee.I troll 1.5 to 1.8 I don’t really pay attention I can look at my gear and see how it looks and know the speed is right.I only use a chrome sling blade and a pink hootchie .Water temp ,early season Kokanee are shallow them they get deeper.I don’t care about temperature just run my gear where I see Kokanee on my fish finder.I use dyed corn or pink Berkeley maggots with mikes scent.I use 6.5 ft cheap fiberglass rods with big line counter reels 10 lb mono ,I use the same rods for crank baits walleyes and lake trout.I live by flaming gorge and strawberry in Utah catch big Kokanee not those shakers in Idaho.look up lake records at those 2 lakes

Those fish aren't pinned, and that's the problem. If you aren't going to engine set em (highly recommended), you have to let that fish turn and bury the hooks in the corner. You are grabbing the rod while they are still chewing!

Not trying to beat you up, but we always wait a few seconds before grabbing the rod, would also say your drag is too loose. Both of those will help hookups, hook size and spacing might need to be looked at too. Smaller fish like jacks and coho will not strike like a bigger king to really set the hooks. I was losing a lot of fish years ago, kept switching hooks and size tell I got a good landing ratio

For the last few years we have gone to a let them eat mentality. Wait at least five seconds and then let the boat set the hook by giving it a little gas. Salmon are not bass and their mouths are much softer. If you listen to the audio of any big C guide boat you’ll hear them gun it for a second to set the hook, the client never does. The moment we went to this system we don’t lose fish a few seconds into the fight. My guess is that you set the hook too hard, now the hole not the diameter of the hook but much larger and longer. So then when the head shakes start happening that hook has the opportunity to move back and out.
@walkingonwaterfishing
@walkingonwaterfishing 3 күн бұрын
That’s 100% fair I will let them eat long and when in my boat I will just set with the boat itself so I am forced to wait to grab the rod

Hmmmmm ok I fish this fishery a lot I live here , but again you say dialing in but you give no information leader length, no colors no hook setup no nothing Just watching you fish it is hard to give feedback when we the viewers have no information to base the feedback on. when Jacks are biting alot good luck catching them on 360's and superbaits they just get off it happens but without you giving information it is impossible to offer solutions/.... a ton of people have had the same problem this year including myself some days you are the windshield some days you are the bug. It is called fishing not catching...... p.s I have learned the hard way let them take the rod to the water let them hook themselves you are a quick draw artist just wait a bit longer and make sure the drag is set pretty firm so all slack is taken up on the bite .

Not to gain anything from your misfortune but it makes me feel a little better. I've trolled a little on buddies boats before and caught fish but I took my own boat out for my first salmon trip last weekend and while we saw a lot of fish being caught my boat just wasn't one of them. It was a brand new river to me and my fishing partner so trying to learn the river and navigate through the mess of boats and trying to catch fish proved to be really difficult. I did hook one nice chinook and it came off about 20 feet from the boat after fighting it for maybe 15 seconds. And I went home with a jack coho. Not a complete loss but it was discouraging. Only those two take downs all day. I'll count it as a win but I know we could have done better.

The first thing I noticed is you should really slow down when grabbing the rod, let the fish turn and really set the hooks itself before you pick it up, I think that alone will help alot. 2nd if I’m running super baits, always use 3 hooks, you are allowed to so why wouldn’t you. I like to run only 1 bead, hook and then I’ll set my 2nd hook shank right at the end of the Superbait. So if it short strikes the hook is right there. And then I’ll run my 3rd hook 2-3 inches behind that. If im running spinners it’s always a treble with a single trailer about an inch- 1in 1/2 from the bottom of the treble. I like to run gamaktsu octopus, BRB hooks and addicted fine wire bait hooks, always 3/0 or 4/0, maybe your hooks are too small. Days like this are bound to happen, but when they do I find myself changing the gap sizes in between my hooks, changing leaders because the hooks could be dull and moving the position of my rod holders, the angle could be off. Hope this helps!!!

Set the hook when you pull the rod out of the holder. Razor sharp hooks, my friend-- sharpen sharpen sharpen. When you have a fish on, put the kicker in neutral. In that stretch of river, I don't use more than 8-10oz of lead. Is it possible your rods are just a bit too light? I like a stiffer rod when trolling down there, and that hook is gonna get set hard. I've noticed bite drops of by 8, then really drops off by 10, but sometimes 11 can be magic.
