Revisiting this while the physics world is crying on Twitter right now about some AI thing getting the prize this year.. feynman would be laughing at all this.

I love this eye-opening speech about gatekeepers. Gatekeepers - people who value the social hype around something over the thing itself.

'Special' clubs are silly. I've got nothing against them existing, but they're silly. Groucho Marx said "I wouldn't want to join any club that would have me"

1. you can decline the prize, which feynman didn't 2. the nobel prices exists to showcase and highlight ingenuity and human progress, not to honor one person. the person is the placeholder for the accomplishment.

I like a lot of what Feynman says, as a person he's a bit prickly for my taste. This in particular though is a discussion I think about often. I could not agree more. Performative honors are a toxin to civilization.

The same way I never needed a graduate degree, neither does she. She is way harder working and smarter than the mansion resident. Why doesn't my professor tell him to stop shoving a clown down his throat everywhere he goes? The boy got the whole family figured out: kzbin.infoUgkxmfegpjUcy_nK5Oa8VipaBNgjaM2KzwtJ?si=ueAskJo9jctEP3-x

It's ironic that receiving honors from others really only bothers the people that have true honor in themselves

It is the conformity to authority that makes people arrogant and loose themselves. Pof Feynman has is intelligent, sharp, and a man of individualism as its trait are of a true scientist. No wonder he feels uncomfortable without reason. He is free.

Let's remember that he accepted his own Nobel Prize, acknowledging the value of the prize in his final statement of his acceptance speech: "And so, you Swedish people, with your honors, and your trumpets, and your king - forgive me. For I understand at last - such things provide entrance to the heart. Used by a wise and peaceful people they can generate good feeling, even love, among men, even in lands far beyond your own. For that lesson, I thank you. Tack!"

Rather than just a prize, there should be enormous educational effort to explain to the world's schoolchildren what the work being awarded is all about. Make the prize much more about education about the field being awarded, rather than just an honour.
