This is from a direct-to-disc recording ("Direct from Cleveland") from the end of the 1970s, just prior to digital recording. For premium sound quality, Telarc dispensed with magnetic tape and the orchestra played "LIVE" like had been done at the turn of the century. A cutting head made the master disc right from the mic signal as they played, and if the orchestra had made the slightest mistake, they'd have had to scrap it and start the LP side again. PLUS they had to do the whole record several times because each maser disc was only good for a limited number of pressings. A fantastic orchestra at its peak with a conductor pushing a burning tempo. Those were the days.

My piano teacher in high school had this recording. It was my first exposure to Anderson, to the viola as a solo instrument, and (after the 1st symphony), to Brahms. My teacher set this up as the template in my mind for a certain sort of excellence. He was not wrong.

A perfect upload. There are a couple of slight sound blips but nothing which will ruin your enjoyment of the performance. Many thanks for uploading this important sound document.

He was a very bad conductor :without culture without soul...without good manners ..very precise because he missed all the rest :Just a scheiss taktschlaeger. They adopted him in U.s.A. Just for propaganda reasons. If course in his younger years he was much Better not so histerical.I am sure Richard Strauss would have not like him.

AA. Corriveau. Laval, août 2024.

Thank you for uploading that - Boult was probably the greatest ever British conductor, and also an accessible man who didn't affect the grandiosity of some; a quick mind, deep intelligence, and one of the best influences on 20th century British music, without ever being narrowly nationalistic.

Unfortunatly this is average romantic music, how ever well it's played. While Mozart is superior classical music, for example his string quartet n20 and the duos for violin and alto.
