I love these colors and this set. Jean has hand picked colors that compliment her teachings and online art school. So sad to hear your review and I don’t hear criticism but lack of understanding of how Jean uses these colors. She teaches brand new beginners to advanced and professional watercolor artists. These colors in this master collection are perfect to use in those classes. They are also perfect to use in my own paintings. So much to learn from her.. I have never seen Jean mix her colors the way you are to judge her..personally I love these colors and this set. There is certainly the ability to buy individual Daniel smith colors the way you paint. Maybe that’s the way you could judge the colors And mix them .. or even better take one of her classes and see for yourself why she selected them. And not be ignorant of why these colors were selected.

@@janetlundstedt9350 these colors are a joke for any professional artists to be using. 4 of the colors aren't even light-fast or suitable for professional work. She doesn't care about these paints. It was an obvious cash grab. Plain and simple. I'm not ignorant just because I have a different opinion than you do. The mixing possibilities here are limited, most are multi-pigment convenient mixtures with cheap pigments and dyes, and several are fugitive. That's very valid criticism for a set labeled "master artists set." If you're looking for a review that just fangirls and over-hypes everything then you need to go elsewhere. There are plenty of channels that offer that kind of content for the sake of sponsorships and making money. My videos are always my honest opinion. Grow up and learn to accept opinions that differ from your own. Otherwise you'll find it very hard to live in this world.

I love your videos because they encourage me to do my own experiments with color. Interesting that my experience with these same Ultramarine Blues is quite different. I find the WN tinting strength to be so weak I must use much more of it in mixes to get the color I want. Conversely I find the MG tinting strength to be so strong that I must much less of it in mixes. Sitting in the middle is DS. As you would expect, when I want granulation DS is my go-to. When I want a smooth application MG cannot be beat. I have and use both.

I had the choice of choosing either the full set of lightfast or holbein pencils and because i thought i could trust the lightfast more chose them . For me it was the biggest mistake of my life and i wasted over$400 on a set of pencils that i now know i absolutely hate. A large number of them weren't centred properly and many were affected by streakiness and what i would describe as clumping of the pigments like with poor quality oil pastels resulting in uneven lay down of colour in more heavy applications. Ive never been so disappointed as they felt sticky almost with the mars orange being the worst affected although many were. My daughter visited Japan and brought me home a few holbein to try and i actually cried when i felt how beautifully smooth they were with very even solid coverage and were centred perfectly. I made the mistake of being impulsive and not testing a couple first and am now stuck with a set that will just rot on the shelf I hate them so much. I have the polychromos and love them but wanted to extend my collection and saved for 2yrs to do that then believing all the reviews instead of testing first wasted all the money i had and it will take me another 2yrs to save up again to fix my mistake. Im so sad i believed the hype and am glad that someone else has mentioned that they found some colours streaky. Im also shocked to see that bloom / fogginess after a year and wouldn't want to use them because of that either, it's awful that they do that and definitely could cause problems for anyone selling their work. Very disappointed all round.

I know this is an old video but I'm planning on saving up for these pencils eventually, they're next on my list along with some more Luminance and some back up Holbein pencils since I've been buying those open stock, but I really want the full set of these after only buying 3 of them. I think they're so beautiful and work so well with Luminance, Pablo, Holbein and Polychromos pencils. I have yet to try them with anything else yet, but I imagine waxier pencils like Prismacolor and Coloursoft or Chromaflow might not work quite as well as they don't work the best with my Artists pencils from Derwent, but maybe not since some people use them with the Drawing pencils which are waxier. Like I said, I haven't tried them with those yet, but I should since I do have some of those (other than Chromaflow). Anyways, I really want the box because it's so gorgeous and I keep all of my pencils in their tins/boxes so I thought I should actually treat myself and get the wooden box since I've never had one before and all of my Derwent tins show up to me super dented and unable to close no matter where I buy them from 😒. I'm only a colorist, I don't really do art much anymore, unfortunately, so I've been trying to convince myself I don't need these but I think I do, I just really love how they work with other sets I own and love and I think they round out some of them nicely too, like they have some colors I've always thought the Polychromos set was lacking, for instance. I liked hearing your initial opinions and seeing the pencils. Thanks!

I tested the polychromo's for almost 4 months and they all passed the test beside a pink color which faded a lot. I love Holbein the most, love, LOVE their colors and the way they draw. Derwent Lightfast is ok and have more natural colors then the Polychromo's The Polychromo's come in 2nd, some colors are scratchy but love their vibrancy but maybe sometimes too vibrant that it's somewhat unnatural. they work well with the work I'm producing!

Hi Nichole. I just did the exact same test with my French Ultramarines. I was wondering if your DS French Ultramarine was mislabeled at the factory and it's their regular Ultramarine. Because mine is very saturated and leans more violet than my Winser and Newton French Ultramarine. And my W&N is my all time favorite in French Ultramarine because once its dried, it just appears brighter, cleaner and less dull. You know how that dull appearance happens when some pigments totally dry? A reason why I adore Cobalt Blue. I love my MGraham Ultramarine too because it doesn't lose as much of it's vibrancy either and sometimes you just need a more non granulating Ultramarine. I don't like granular flower petals or on baby's skin. I painted realistic infant portraits for several years. Now retired from that. PS, my Holbein French Ultramarine is the most violet and most granulating of all. My Schmincke French Ultramarine runner up. Still the most vibrant to me after all is dried is my W&N. Sooo beautiful !

I paint florals and after watching your vidoes on Mijello watercolours, i plan to buy them. I did some price comparison and found Mijello very affordable, compared to Daniel Smith. Do these Mijello pure pigment colours work well with florals? Thank you.
@nicolemartinart5819
@nicolemartinart5819 7 ай бұрын
Hi there 👋 Excellent question. Yes I think they would be great for floral paintings but I do advise that you practice with them first before jumping right in on a full painting. Only because these watercolors are extremely pigmented, more so than Daniel Smith, and they have very vibrant colors. If you like to work in more pastel tones and light florals, you may find it a bit challenging to control the pigment load at first. Just remember to use a light touch and they will last you practically forever. Good luck 😊
