This is why I laugh at modern fans who mock old time players for being milkmen, farmers, plumbers and construction workers during the off-season. Obviously they've never messed with milkmen, farmers, plumbers and construction workers.

I’m not anti McGuire, Sosa or Bonds but this guy was strong, fast and played catcher and so many positions. Undoubtedly without steroids and much less information on nutrition etc. Nobody knows much about him now. Have to dig.

The only New York Yankee to ever wear the number 4. Even Babe Ruth's number 3 was given to other players until the Yankees retired it. But only Lou Gehrig wore number 4. Trivia: The Yankees started wearing numbers on the back of their uniforms during the 1929 season. The numbers were given out according to the batting order. On that fateful day, Earle Combs wore #1, Mark Koenig #2, Babe Ruth #3, Lou Gehrig #4, Bob Meusel #5, Tony Lazzeri #6, Leo Durocher #7, Johnny Grabowski #8, Benny Bengough #9, and Bill Dickey #10. 😊

How would Hornsby fare today? None of those old time speed ballers like Smokey Joe Wood, Lefty Grove or Walter Johnson likely threw 100mph. Pitchers back then pitched the full nine innings and lasted decades. They threw perhaps 90+. There are kids in high school today who throw 90mph. For instance Matt Harvey threw 90 in high school. That's why their arms fall off nowadays.

After Hornsby passed in early 1963, he was buried in an out of the way place called Hornsby's Bend. I remember my parents spent the better part of a Sunday afternoon looking for a his grave, so that I could pay my respects to this great man. I was 11. No GPS back then. His headstone was quite simple. Name,, birth and death dates (1896-1963) and crossed bats carved into the stone. My parents were heros to me too that day.

Ted Williams quit at 521 home runs, only 13 shy of foxx. He told a reporter that even if he went past foxx, he wouldn’t stay in second place very long as a lot of young sluggers with surely pass him. He turned out to be right. But I wonder, maybe he just had too much respect for Jimmie And was OK with third place.
