Not heard this in 40+ years since The Great God Peel played it one late Friday night, the ethereal crackling bringing the BBC to me.

XTC played this live on the ITV children's show Magpie. It turned me into a part time punk. It's still one of the best performances by a band on tv I have ever seen.

They say Wine destroys the memory What stupid fool wrote that When it brings your face Within an inch of me I'll raise my glass to that They say cigarettes Destroy your heart You've taken care of that With your eyes So far away I'll just take a blast and relax But you know that I'm joking, don't you? These are just props I'm put you higher than anyone I just hope to God you don't let me drop

I bought this, and I’ve never stopped loving it. But now I’m older, this also brings nostalgia… that time when all the record companies were into Dublin bands. So it also reminds me of my old late cousin, John Borrowman who was in The Atrix. Oh yeah, and youth. That’s long gone, but great music stays with us. Farkin’ awesome to hear this again! ❤

The melody and vocals are beautiful. The lyrics romantic and erudite and evocative. I loved it as a teenager and it sounds great today.

Sensational piece and vocal, which has been described as TWEE, POMPOUS, OVERLY GRANDIOSE(whatever that means) A superb album, IMHO, both then, and perhaps even more so now,given the glow of sweet nostalgia. 😂 ❤

Lyrically this is 'ingenious'! This is a glorious and hilarious celebration of some of the most charismatic and memorable on screen detectives of all time!! The success of all of the above was considerable and Billy Howard 'thankfully' took full advantage of this by releasing this memorable record!!😊
@adrianbrowne78749 ай бұрын
Some people of a certain vintage myself included, may well remember this with fondness! Some of the most popular fictionalized television detectives of this era are impersonated 'brilliantly' here by Billy Howard! 😊
