You have to read the fine print (binding specification) of the product. The discharge/charge current is limited by the power mosfets in the BMS. These are costly and hence they are the bare minimum acceptable, usually 1A per Ah of capacity (absolute maximum ratings of the chip, you'd better derate it by at least 30% to have a chance it will last a little bit). So your 7Ah battery can deliver 7A maximum, about 70W. Totally insufficient for an UPS. A corresponding lead acid battery (7Ah) could deliver 200W for 10 minutes. Additionally the LiFePO4 chemistry is rated for thousands of cycles, but the electronic of the BMS? They say nothing. I do not think it will last as much, especially if taxed at the max absolute rating of the mosfets ....... And what about accidental short circuits? Would you instantly fry the BMS and hence destroy the whole thing in 1 millisecond? With a lead acid battery you only get a spark, but nothing in the battery is permanently damaged. I am not surprised the UPS manufacturers are sticking with the old and trusted lead acid technology ......
@Andrewsnotes1

Excellent points, thank you. The BMS must be the reason for the failure of the first part of the test when under a large load. Fortunately, my loads will not be this large or for this duration.

Thanks very much, for coming back, and running these real-world tests. The LifePo4 managed only 50% of the expected time, in a high-load situation. Which may have been due to a shutdown in the protective circuits, in the presence of excess heat. / Yet there was still energy left in the batteries. So a cool-down period, followed by a circuit-reset may have restored operation... for another 15min period. Not very helpful. / But in a low-load situation, where heat was NOT a problem, the lifespan was EXTENDED. By 40% over what was expected from a lead-acid battery. / Much appreciated! It's really nice to see tests like these in situations where the answers are not simple, or cut and dry. There is some complexity here. Since these units were designed to work with SLA batteries, heat wasn't a concern. So they are _completely enclosed_ with NO ventilation. Like an Easy-Bake Oven. Which you have demonstrated is a disadvantage for LifePo4. / I suspect that if these had SOME passive airflow, it would help. And with even a tiny fan to assist, could perhaps completely eliminate the activation of the BMS shutdown.
@Andrewsnotes1
@Andrewsnotes1 14 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment, the testing surprised me as well. Considering my UPS has small loads on it, I expect the batteries to last some time on standby as well as in use during power outages. It seems Lifepo4 drop ins as replacements for sealed lead acid batteries are not yet ready for prime time especially for large load equipment requiring reliable uptime.

If you only get 3 years out of your battery then you're doing something very wrong. I've got the exact same 275 cca Everstart and I'm on year 11 (yes, ELEVEN) with no sign of slowing down. How? It's very easy: I don't allow corrosion to form on terminals and use a corrosion prevention spray (which you clearly aren't doing based on this video). This is extremely important as corrosion shortens the lifespan (and that battery was covered in it). Additionally, I slow charge the battery once in the Spring and once in the Fall to maximum capacity with a quality tender unit. Lastly, a new battery should be prepped and charged before installation. Too many people buy new batteries and just install them and use them without prep. No reason not to get at least 10-12 years out of a lead acid battery that's properly maintained and 14-15 is possible (I speak from experience).

What battery tender do you recommend?
@afellowinnewengland6142
@afellowinnewengland6142 3 күн бұрын
@@corymillen9824 I use a Deltan Battery Tender Plus 1.25amp on lawn mowers and cars. However, ideally you want to use a 0.8 amp Battery Tender Jr. The slower the charge the better for the battery. Lead acid doesn't like speed, but it does love to be 100% charged. Give it a good overnight charge in the spring and fall. Ideally leave the tender hooked up over winter. Lead acid batteries that are kept constantly topped off at 100% and never depleted below 50% can last 15+ years.

I just did the install, which is easy and quick. I attempted to do this 16 feet in the air on a ladder. I quickly realized that wasn't happening. I had to take them all down. If you are purchasing and installing these lights, buy the damn reflectors and install them all at once. The light is harsh without the reflectors and you can see it in your peripheral vision. I have the clear reflectors and they help tremendously cutting out the glare without cutting down on brightness. I'm sure the cloudy would be even better.
