So... just at 4min mark.... it seems like you slid the shrink wrap on AFTER you attached the terminal end. It goes on before and you slide up to the terminal end. (The wire you have doesn't have a terminal end on one end... you could now slide the smaller size up to the terminal end. ) Did I miss something?

I don't know if you are still responding to these messages I thought I would share what I have observed to answer your question if I am doing this right; no, the fiberglass on the top of the boat deck and cabin top is integral to the strength and flexibility of the boat. When the fiberglass cloth was laid and cured it formed one piece. The repairs should have been done from inside the cabin there is a good example of this on BOAB "Bums On A Boat" youtube channel and "Sailing Magic Carpet" @@christopherpkohler
@clemoyne4 жыл бұрын
Pulling the impeller should be easy. Step 1) remove the cover. Step 2) using a set of channel locks or similar, pull the entire impeller and shaft assembly out. It is much easier to take the impeller off the shaft this way.

I am sorry to said the the bow and rotten wood repairs are likely to fail. For the bow repair, you shall reinforce the joint of the top skin you cut. One possible option is to grind both the patch and adjacent area and used fiberglass tape ( few layers ) and epoxy. Without reinforcement, the stress of walking over will likely crack your repair. As you probably know, injecting epoxy may cure delaminated area, but where the core is wet, it is usually a lost of effort and material. Good luck anyway with your repair. Keep posting.
@christopherpkohler4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your input. I did fill the joints with epoxy, but not tape. It's been two years and so far, the repair in the bow is sound. The areas around the shrouds feel solid but when sounded, they still thud. I will probably have to replace the core around those areas at some point. Thanks once again for your input.

on the port side cut crews same way as along deck where attached to cabin side you can then drill through holes into ice box so when you go to reattach you can from inside ice box
@christopherpkohler5 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion, but the more I think about it, I will remove that ice box. I just can't see myself using it and I would rather have the space.
@Annie493255 жыл бұрын
to remove coaming use a sawsall with long thin metal cutting blade that way you can bend to lay flat against deck run under. you can cut one or two from under so you can pry it up to slide blade under.
@christopherpkohler5 жыл бұрын
I wish I would have thought of this! I didn't get it on camera, but what I ended up doing was rocking the coaming back and forth until the screw eventually failed. It ended up breaking, but not cleanly. Some of the wood on the coaming splintered a little. Otherwise, it came off fairly clean, but I had to drill out the remaining screws.

Hi, maybe I could make a safety related comment. 12Vdc and 120Vac does not mix well. You should make sure that these two type of electrical circuit are well segregated from each others. Keep posting, it is always interesting to see someone taking care of older boats, especially smaller one.

Thank you so much for commenting. Your right of course. For the time being, I am only wiring a DC system. Once that is done, I will look at how to set up an AC system...on a separate panel and switch board. For now though, I am just trying to keep it simple.

Thanks for making these, I might have found a project like this as well. What was your step-father the sailor say about the condition of the boat initially? And could you have put it in the water last summer (no refit)?
@christopherpkohler6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian. First of all, these videos are old. The ones posted so far are from the spring of 2017. It has been difficult to find the time to edit and post. My step father suggested I buy a trailer sailor like an O'day or McGregor and tried to steer me in that direction. He was worried that this was going to turn into a money pit and that I wouldn't get out of the water. When he saw the boat he arrived at the same conclusions I did. It is structurally sound; no blistering or water in the hull. A couple of soft spots on the deck, but nothing major. He was more concerned about the condition of the engine. It started though so no real issues there. I did put it in the water during the summer of 2017. It went in the first week of July and we went day sailing about 7 or 8 times that summer. Last winter, I started some major projects which I didn't get finished in time for the 2018 summer season. All of those videos are coming. Barring anything unforeseen, I should be on the water again by the end of May at the latest. Hopefully sooner.

If you decide to pull out those latch lockers in the starboard quarterberth area, let me know; I will take them off your hands. I have #433. Your wiring situation is 10 times better than mine. Check the chainplates, mast step, and thru-hulls carefully, and then get it in the water come spring.
@rickrothenbuhler79537 жыл бұрын
One of mine showed the evidence of moisture weeping out, from the bottom part of the glassed-in portion next to the hull. This one I replaced. The other side looked good. To check, I drilled several small holes thru the glassed in portion of the chainplate, to check for moisture. What came out was very dry. I also popped off the chainplate covers on deck and checked very carefully that area for water ingress and signs of soft deck core. Only one side was bad there, too.
@danielclint10336 жыл бұрын
Rick Rothenbuhler No, just rebuild the mast step now, the original will collapse eventually, guaranteed. If you can get a nice hunk of lead, incorporate that into a new solid mast step with a little added ballast.
