Interesting song, sounds almost Motown-esque at times! Not what I expected from a Czech record.

Goodness!! I was sitting here watching the olympics and somewhere in my brain a song from my early adolescence came to mind. I remembered being at a kinda family resort…kinda like in “Dirty Dancing’ and being in the shower singing this song. As I didn’t immediately recall the words or who sang it, my mind finally put together first ‘Johnny has to fight’ then came ‘I want to go with you from morning to night.’ As I went to google it, the words ‘the cruel war is raging’ and every word came back to me. Ancient memory is so cool, when it obliges you. I was 11 or 12 years old. My dad had been dating a woman, first we ever met since my parents divorced when I was 4 yo. My younger brother and I stayed in TN with Dad, while our mother and older sister drove off to return to Richmond, Va. I found out later my mom had been previously married and my older sister was from that marriage. My dad adopted her when my parents married. The woman was a widow after her husband a U of Tennessee assistant coach and 2 other coaches were riding together to the athletic department to study the game film of us tieing against U of Alabama. Unfortunately, they were riding in a VW bottle and somehow were demolished when upon crossing at railroad crossing, the car was hit by train. The woman had 2 young sons 6 and 4. So as they got serious we were a blending family with 4 kids. She hated me. I am not sure why, but it was comp, etc hell having her in my life. Eventually, we were moving to Birmingham, Al as my dad merged his company with a guy from there. The most amazing thing happened. I went to camp that June and then went to stay with family friends until the rest were to move in mid August. I realized as I joined my father and brother at our new home, that she was suddenly not moving with us,. Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus! It was fall of ‘69 and the Vietnam War was still taking young men’s life….dying for a cause I didn’t understand. My basketball coach’s son, Skipper was a few years older than me. He was a helucopterpilot in ‘nam. I found an interview not too long ago that CBS was interviewing Skipper and they got called to fly. He says ‘I havelock go, catch you when I get back!’ His helicopter was shot down on that mission. He was such a handsome, nice guy. He had really long feet. When he was coming up to intersection in building where he had to turn right or left, you would always know he was coming as his long feet entered the corridor ahead of the rest of his body. It was such a loss, heartbreaking for sure. Years later visiting DC, I went to Vietnam Memorial, found his name and like other people I watched I took out a piece of paper and used a pencil to capture his name on the wall. Not sure why I shared all this, but it was a conscious stream of memories and I wrote where my mind went. To all who have served, thank you for your service and your ultimate sacrifices.

Well ole Rusty has made it to that er... "final campground in the land beyond the sun". Here's hoping he spends the rest of eternity orbiting the sun in close proximity. Of course Terry Nelson, the truly classy bloke who sought to cash in on a war criminal's infamy shuffled off this mortal coil a while back. Hopefully they'll be on opposing orbits that collide every so often.

Calley was a coward. A gutless wonder who didn't have the balls to stand up and do as his oath required; REFUSE to carry out an illegal order. He's finally where he belongs - and Nixon can't pardon him on this one.
