just 0.03 seconds off 43...man that would have been something really cool..if he could just have musted an extra boost at some point. But i guess this was unbelievable too

There’s something quite suspect about this record.. dude came out of nowhere breaking the SA record, then took a further 1.4 seconds off in less than two years for the world record. 1.5 years or so later he vanished. I think he’s back now, but nowhere near that same level.

Interestingly, he had to go to the southern hemisphere to do it. Aaaah 😅 I remember Michael saying that Wayde was destined to break 43 seconds, but it’s such a tragedy that injury befell him. But someone else will come along and do it, Wayde has shown that it can be done.

400 metres world record split times Van Niekerk ran the opening 200 metres in 20.5 seconds and the closing 200 metres in 22.5 seconds, giving a differential of 2.0 seconds. The 100-metre-long-section beginning after the first 100 metres was completed in 9.8 seconds. JUST ABSOLUTELY AWESOME

This is not Johnson’s whole reaction. I heard his reaction at the moment Van Niekerk crossed the line. He said, “It’s a new world record!!” and went on, without any self reference. So professional.

We’re so lucky to have Michael Johnson commentating, on the BBC, for the World Athletics Championships 2023. He’s so wise when it comes to both the technical side of the track, sprint, events as well as showing how each athlete is an individual that needs to be treated as such. He must be an amazing coach. 😊

Yes, Michael oozes class. You know how they rate boxers when they say ‘pound for pound he’s the best boxer in the world’?! Well, ‘pound for pound’, Michael has to be one of my all-time favourite athletes, as much as what he has contributed off the track as on it. With reference to Wayde, I’m so gutted that he got hurt like that, tearing his ACL, as he probably (we’ll never know) would have bettered his World Record by another 1/10 of a second, and dipped below 43. You know, it’s like as if Usain Bolt never got to beat his first World Record in the 100 m due to a serious injury. I know he played football for charity but you hope that other athletes would find safer ways to give back rather than endangering themselves in that fashion. I’m so gutted for him. But, then again, no one can ever take away that incredible moment in 2016, and the Olympic gold medal, from Wayde. I never tire of watching it and I always get emotional as he crosses the line. And, as he should, he gives glory to God for the gift he’s been given.
