Funny how a brother and sister could be so very different.

Her reading from the New Testament in Greek is a very nice touch - she was an aristocrat, so basically not knowing Greek is a huge no-no to begin with, but also she is a Greek princess i.e. an Orthodox and living in times of language strife in Greece itself.

yes, part German, part Greek (Alice and Philip), part Danish, even part Swedish (Alice’s sister The Queen Consort of Sweden), the Battenberg’s did well for themselves.

Well played, A perfect monologue and the ticking of the clock in the background makes it even better, excellent acting.

One of the best scenes in the series. "You're left not me I'm on the way out ." She's such a joy for her short time on the show.

the writers of this episode got it wrong, the only “part Greeks” were Alice’s five children, due to her marriage to Prince Andreas of Greece. The rest of the Battenbergs were, as she said “part German” but it was a very big part of their makeup.

The ticking of the clock, the creaking bed, the pidgeons in the background. The subtle and delicate acting. This scene has a depth and frailty to it that makes it unforgetable. It is impossible to think that the actors are nót brother and sister. Beautiful.

Mountbatten talks about spending his life serving his adopted country & the state of that country at the time & the heartbreak he feels over it. All the time he gave defending something. Personally, I can relate. 4 generations of my family gave their blood, sweat & tears in defense of the US. To see the shape of the US today makes me feel as if we wasted it all for an ungrateful nation.

This is so profound, one of the best scenes I've of this series. When she refers to them as the battenbergs, the name they gave up........phillip really readjusted himself back into the fray as a decendent of victoria and albert

Getting to see two legendary veteran actors, Jane Lapotaire and Charles Dance, share a scene together, let alone bring two historical figures like Lord Mountbatten and Princess Alice to life, is an absolute treat.

I wonder how the courtiers' attitude toward the Duke of Edinburgh would have been if his mother had been present in his life during his courtship and marriage. Humble as she was she was still born in the presence of Queen Victoria and was the daughter in law of the King of Greece.

Not surprisingly, I've heard Jane Lapotaire was considered for the role Lady Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones. I can see how she certainly could have handled that character.

This is one of my favorite scenes. There is much self-actualization in it, once you reach late middle age and stand on the precipice of being elderly. Sort of an aaaaaaah fug-it, they have to live here. 😂❤

Princess Alice was deaf from birth on. She could lip read in four languages (English, German, French and Greek) and speak, but not as shown here. Unfortunately, the series presents her in a way that does not show the true Alice. If you ever have heard a deaf person talking you know what I mean. Sorry for crackwising, but I have published the first biography about Alice in two volumes, which is based on historical facts and events. Maybe one can say that the series wanted some more drama in presenting her character...sadly. The even presented Diana in a very bad way...

Princess Alice idolised her aunt Ella, who was the sister of the last Russian Tsarina. Both sisters were killed by the Bolshevicks. Ella became a nun after her husband (uncle of the Tsar) was assasinated. After her murder she was canonized.
