found this video after you commented on mine, clicked this one specificly bc i love tmnt, x-men, and radical politics lol. the section about hope dying is something that I've thought about for a long time, I haven't read that book or heard that quote before but the idea of hope has positives and negatives when it comes to the success of "the left." I feel like hope implies that we will win which is not necessarily true. it's socialism or barbarism bc class tensions will rise to a point where change will occur but whether we upheave the current system or that system all falls apart and we are stuck in anarchy is up to us. real action rarely happens in america, the politically consious are often making videos like this (i'm not dissing, i do it too) that spread awareness but do not spread action (unions/striking, boycotting, mutual aid, organized v10lenc3, etc). but at the same time how can you see the terrible things that happen in the world still get out of bed without hope. when plans fail and hope dies, you try other avenues bc it is the right thing to do, not because of hope. the tmnt movie is really fun but when these themes are handled by a white liberal (surprised seth rogan can be part of making an even halfway decent movie btw) they will obviously be distorted through the lense of whiteness. tmnt and specifically the idw tmnt comics normally have really good politics. a lot of times in the start of their stories the turtles fight "crooks" but later on in the stories that is often seen as a childish thing they did just bc they wanted to be involved in the world. they don't really integrate into society bc it's intentionally written like segreagation but there is much more solidarity between mutants. in idw another group of mutants led by a cat called old hob is kind of a past magneto type where he wants to kill all humans but they work together and many members of each groups become good friends. The turtles and them often hit the TGRI company in strategic attempts to expose them/take them down. Splinter tells rapheal something that reflects the way if the turtles that seems like a paraphrased quote from lenin's state and revolution that goes something along the lines of: "we must be violent only when absolutely necessary but the mass amount of violence from the ruling classes have deemed our violence necassary." also just watch x-men 97...that's a terrible way to consume art, either go all in or don't watch it at all. I'm not saying get disney plus, pirate it, that's what I did but these are are just my thoughts as an "artist." I like the off script stuff it's fun. and u got that einstein hair (compliment).

Wow this is the best comment I’ve ever gotten! I really liked your video and I appreciate your energy and time! I’m not sure if you have read parable of the sower (currently reading) but it’s ever presence is so infectious and the balance of hope and action is definitely a central theme! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the work! I’m hoping our current administration is helping people realize the power and impact of organize locally and being apart of community but that maybe my bubble! I do think community organizing is the most important thing for our current reality and I hope others feel the same! Why does calling Seth Rogan a liberal feel generous, you are so right tho, I’m surprised he didn’t get blackballed for sausage party. I read the opening volume of the idw Tmnt and the Batman crossover which was so goofy so hearing all that makes me curious in exploring their actual comic history. Comparing Hob to magneto is something that clicks immediately even though I would have never made the connection myself! I appreciate this rad comment! I have tv show allergies 💀

Final Fantasy 7 was the first game I ever purchased and the first RPG I ever played. I had no idea what the game was or about and honesty just looked at the cover and back and thought it looked cool. When I got home and watched the opening cutscene my jaw dropped. This was the grand adventure I was looking for and the my love for RPGs started there.

I hit subscribe as soon as you immediately stated FF Strangers of Paradise being better than most believe. I’ve been an avid fan of the FF series for a very long time. I don’t know if it was the time it released or the expectations people had but it’s more deserving of praise than most people are willing to give.

Final Fantasy VII. i remember getting the demo disk. My mom left me home alone a lot at a young age and i didnt know how to feed or take care of myself. She went out partying a lot. But i rememeber the music and characters making me independent and teaching me about the real world. That game gave me a spark inside my scared heart as a kid, it gave me a strength i could not fathom at that young age.

At 13:23 you say that there is an obvious dichotomy between Splinter and Superfly and as a black person, Superfly appeals to you and not Splinter. But why? As a mutant, Splinter is just as black-coded as Superfly. When Splinter first expresses his prejudices against humans, these prejudices are portrayed as ridiculous. Milking turtles seems impossible at this point in the movie. Later, the Turtles are actually milked and Spinter's strangely precise prejudices are confirmed. Splinter learns to differentiate, there are humans like April and there are humans who milk. Superfly is the villain because he doesn't differentiate. He doesn't specifically seek revenge on the humans who killed Stockman. He just takes revenge on random people. He becomes a kaiju because he's a danger to everyone. I also wouldn't say that the terrorism of the humans is ignored. When Splinter saves the Turtles and frees them from the milking machine, it's perhaps the most brutal fight scene in the entire movie. Splinter starts off by impaling a guard's head with a baton and ends up using the Turtles' weapons to deadly effect. Splinter is definitely a murderer. But portrayed in an acceptable way. Because he differentiates. Doesn't this movie show the oppressors setting the oppressed against each other? And as you say, maybe the sequel will deal with that.

Great comment! I love this kind of discussion and generally I agree with you! Definitely some takes can come off hyperbolic in the video essay format but I totally believe there is room for multiple readings and equally valid interpretations of these characters. I think that’s a great point that I don’t really emphasize in the video enough, the movie does justify splinters fear of extreme and ridiculous violence being carried out. Some of the excerpts I chose from “when they call you a terrorist” about Monte’s time in prison truly seem unreal. I do think that your idea of being able to differentiate being the defining contrast between splinter and superfly, is an extremely valid reading and honestly probably what the writers were going for. My problem is with how it reinforces ideas of model minority and peaceful protest. Minorities are often held to an unfair standard and asked to accept half as much for twice the work. Marginalized groups being framed as villainous for not differentiating while police, news organizations, and private military commit violence against those communities is something we see often, and I think it’s even more problematic that superflys plan is not to explicitly commit violence against humans, but seek liberation for mutants. The generalization, or differentiation that the story has constructed about superfly is not even legitimate. He plans to mutate all animals on the planet, the kaiju is never part of his plan. He becomes a Kaiju because his family and friends turn on him…. and literally push him into the mutagen. His ideas are viewed as dangerous because they don’t conform to the turtles way of appeasing humanity and that’s what turns the people around him against him. I think it’s fair to say it’s not addressed at all is a bit hyperbolic, they are framed as a generic villain/antagonist and their action aren’t praised or glorified. Ultimately, I just wasn’t a fan with how casual and flippant the violence explicitly committed against stockman was depicted. I do think that splinter fight is great, especially as an ode to Jackie Chan fight scenes. You right he gets some good licks in. I just think it also feeds into splinters characterization as complacent with the status quo, as he really only moves into action to uplift and protect his immediate family regardless of the effects it has on the other mutants around him, an unfortunate parallel to the model minority. I definitely agree with you generally though, I don’t think splinters depictions is explicitly negative or leaves no room for a more generous interpretation. Ultimately you are correct the mutants are being turned against each other and there is some amazing room to explore with the further installments! I think online political discussion is very polarized and I’m definitely not immune to that, so I may have given splinter less grace that deserved. I think splinter and superfly are equally valid as minority allegory and I think there is space and necessity for both of them in the fight for mutant liberation; the movie does not offer superfly the equal space and the validation it offers splinter so I had to speak up for my man’s! Thanks again, truly well thought out reflection of the movie and my analysis 🙏🏾

@@BlahNetworkBro Thank you for your answer! There is definitely room for multiple readings. But I think I agree with you more than I read it differently. I was just addressing what I stumbled upon in your essay and was hoping for an answer. And I was very happy that you answered in such detail. I'm not sure what the writers were going for. The movie doesn't feel to me like it's sure what it's going for. I think it's a kids movie and it uses that as an excuse to be shallow or not clear. For example, I'm not sure if the transformation into a kaiju was intentional to portray a lack of differentiation or if it's just a coincidence that fits my interpretation. I think it's more the latter. Kaijus represent forces of nature. Godzilla is nature's answer to the atomic bomb. You can't negotiate with a force of nature. Superfly should have lost the ability to speak, maybe even to think clearly, maybe he would have become a hive mind. But none of this happens. You can negotiate with him. And as you say, the Turtles don't use that. That's messy. I agree with you, it's not his plan to become a kaiju and be powerful enough to reshape the world. His plan is to create a ruling majority of mutants. He is turned into a kaiju. The Turtles are trying to fix a mistake that they made themselves. He is about the same age as the Turtles, but he is not adopted by Splinter at the end of the movie. Instead, Splinter falls in love with a bug who is the same age as his sons. Baxter Stockman died protecting the little Superfly. He sacrificed himself for him. And this is not addressed. I fully agree with you on the problem of peaceful protests. Accept half as much for twice the work. I think there's no escaping this dilemma. It's the dilemma of injustice. That's why it's easier to choose the wrong thing than the right thing. And when you fail, you become what you fight against. If the film had handled the issue of differentiation in a more consistent way, it would not have dehumanized the guards. Then we would have seen them doing their job and being told lies, as it is implied at the beginning. They are even threatened if they fail. The guard whose face gets hurt by Superfly could have a kid who goes to class with April or something like that. That would have revealed Cynthia Utrom as the real villain, as well as the system and the manipulation. A complex issue presented in a layered but approachable way. Sorry for replying so late. It's been a wild few days. And thank you for your answer and for discussing these issues and thoughts! EDIT: Additional thoughts: At the beginning of the movie, Baxter Stockman talks about his test animals and how he won't let TCRI turn Superfly into a soldier. He wants to achieve this by creating more mutants. Superfly continues this plan. Perhaps the mutation is the liberation of the animals and Superfly is not striving for mutant liberation but for animal liberation. And the movie doesn't have the guts to go full PETA and really explore that theme. It's weird that the Turtles are against mutating animals. None of them wants to be a normal animal again. And it is just Superlfy who ends up as a normal animal.

I strongly agree with you on the ending I wish the Turtles and the other mutants stayed with each other as a community rather than the Turtles going out and living with humans with the idea of Superfly becoming an ally but somewhat of a rival (like Vegeta) to the Turtles is genius. I never got the chance to really think about the overall message of the film but even when I watched it in theaters I thought to myself “why do they want to be accepted by these humans so much?” I do believe there’s a spin-off series based off this movie coming out on Paramount i’m curious to see what they do next (I would pirate it bc Nickelodeon is a terrible company) Very well done video brother.
