Now and again I catch myself alone humming one or another line from Der Mondfleck, mostly "wischt und wischt" and so on. I don't speak German and neither am I really into art music or avant-garde. For my ears, the voice melody is, in some sense, catchy, while accompaniment is just an uneasy ambient.

Pierrot Lunaire was written in 1912, a couple years before WW1 broke out. The beginning of the 20th century was a massive time of change and imperial upheaval and many people like Schoenberg felt the decay of the old world on the horizon. This entire piece, not just this movement, is meant to express that sense of unease, that sense of societal collapse, the anxiety that in a state of instability, humans could in an instant could give in to their more negative impulses. It's prophetic, expressive of its time and extremely colorful and creative the way Schoenberg employs tried and true techniques like the canon in brand new musical language, the way the instruments seem to flicker like shadows across the musical landscape, the way the instruments seem to speak through sardonic twisted grins...but no people just listen once and as soon as somethings not a I-IV-V-I progression their like "EWWW what is this"? Don't get me wrong, I love older more traditional music too, but DAMN can we have a little wider range in our conception for the possibilities of musical expression and artistic vision?

I first heard this piece in my music appreciation class around 2 years ago and I find it fascinating. It's brilliant, in my opinion.

Fellow students, I think the point is for it to sound like someone throwing a fit. It's supposed to be an Expressionism thing, from what I read, and that was based on expressing negative feelings (anger, despair, etc.) through the piece, even if it isn't the easiest to look at (or listen to...). Not trying to rain on your complaint parade, but figured I'd leave it here. It's kinda like a musical Ink Blot test, I guess.

Lol. This made me so uncomfortable in academy when we had to listen to it and I now play it to my high school students as an example of expressionist music. In their opinion, it's easily the most unpleasant thing they've heard in music lessons.
