Hey Bob, Really enjoying the RV14 build, keep up the great work. Seriously thinking of the 14 myself. One question: Can you provide a link for the primer that you are using? Thanks!

Glad you like the videos. I'm using the Sherwin-Williams P60G2 Wash Primer that Van's uses on the QB kits (except this one is green and there's isn't tinted. A google search should give you several purchase options, but I got mine here: skygeek.com/sherwin-williams-p60g2-industrial-wash-primer-green-gal.html You also need the R7K44 Catalyst reducer that mixes with it: skygeek.com/sherwin-williams-r7k44-wash-primer-catalyst-reducer-gal.html I used PreKote to prep the parts. I like it because its easy to use, no VOC or anything nasty to dispose of and its used a lot in the industry and by the military. I got mine from Aircraft Spruce, but again there are probably a lot of places out there to order from: www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/prekotesurface.php?clickkey=7243 Hope this helps.. Let me know when you start your build, its a lot of fun!

Instead of changing to steel bar stock in the headrests, did you consider using 2024 T4 aluminum bar stock? It is far stronger than the soft stock you used and you can buy it from Wick's

Bob, Just starting my 14A build. Have the vertical stabilizer & rudder parts ready for priming. I’ve spent months practice riveting,removing rivets & re-riveting in prep for build. Already ruined a part trying to go fast to help my wife do something. Learned not to “get in a hurry” and not to get my pinky too close to the grinding wheel. Enjoy your video’s and look forward to really getting into this build. Amazing fun! Your videos are very clear & crisp photography. Please keep them coming! Thanks, herman

Congrats on getting started... I'm really enjoying the build. Definitely don't rush. As I've heard from a number of people, just think of it as building a lot of little parts that eventually all come together to become an airplane. Just enjoy the process of each part and it will be done when its done. I learned the same lesson with the grinding wheel... currently missing a chunk of skin on one of my fingers LOL... Thanks for the feedback on the videos, glad to hear people are enjoying them! If, you haven't seen it... here is a link to my "whoops" video on the VS. I made a mistake setting the first set of dimples/rivets... don't do what I did in the original video.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/labRenqMn517sKc

Really enjoying your build series. Hoping to start my own build next year. Haven't quite decided on the model yet, although I have the preview plans for a 9. Anyways, a recommendation for your parts prep process that might help. Before, you do any dimpling, I would suggest scuffing with Pre-Kote the parts before you do any dimpling. With the aluminum flat, it will be way easier to scuff up and won't tear your scotch bright pads up as bade. Before priming, then you can just spray and wipe them down with Pre-Kote to remove any oils from your hands.
@BlueSkyFlight
@BlueSkyFlight 14 күн бұрын
Thanks for all of that. I’ve considered doing the prep as you described. I hadn’t because it didn’t seem too bad with all the dimples, but I’m going to give your suggestion a try on the elevator parts I’m working on now to get a better idea of how it compares. Thanks for the suggestion. Keep me posted when you decide on an airplane and also when you start the build… it’s a really rewarding process.

I saw a rendition of this a while back. It's a great way to get into nooks and crannies with ease. Although, I'm not sure if leans more towards nooks, or more towards crannies. 🧐

Unfortunately, everyone at Vans is still in OSH... so... maybe next time :). I'll be sure to film that adventure when I finally get the timing right on it. @@BlueSkyFlight Over the years, I've accumulated three different riveters. One is an old "Pop" brand. Lightweight, two different tips. The second is an old (30+ years) Craftsman model 9-74747. The rivet barrow adjusts horizontal/vertical. Takes time to change the position. The latest is DeWalt swivel head style - my least favorite style. Very large, and unless you can palm a basketball, closing the handles to pull the rivet takes (at least for me) two hands. The swivels head is nice, but I wish the tool was smaller. For the type rivets we're pulling for the Van's RV projects, they're overkill. If you can find a Craftsman 9-74747 (made by Stanley, same as model MR 99) they're one-hand manageable.

I'm not a pilot, but I grew up in Dallas with a best friend whose dad was an American Airlines captain, and I got to fly in their personal planes a lot. I have been an armchair pilot ever since, Lol. While they had a couple of other planes, they ordered a brand new Arrow 200 some time around 1970. My friend and his dad went to the factory to watch it be finished, and after test flight, they flew it home to Dallas. I got to fly in that plane many times, and remember how great it looked and how well it performed. Now, 50 years later, it is really interesting to see someone restore one to virtually new condition.
