A lovely autumnal scene - it almost looks as though the track is ballasted with leaves! The signal resembles one of the old Triang examples, cut down...

Why is the bridge being knocked down?
@user-vz8yb3vd9m18 күн бұрын
I've just read a really thorough report on the trusts website. Well worth a read but to summarise, the bridge is in very poor condition and built upon clay soil. Clay soils are significantly affected by weather causing them to expand and contract during wet/dry periods, not ideal for a solid structure thats not supposed to move! Due to the costs involved to repair/replace, as well as the fact the bridge no longer serves its original purpose of connecting together one estate (either side of the embankments are now owned by seperate parties so no obligation for the railway to provide access from one side to the other) I think its a decision that hasnt been taken lightly at all and the preference would have been to keep it in place owing to its history however as the damage/repairs have been constant throughout its lifetime very little of the bridge is original. The intention is for the bridge to be fully documented and scanned for future posterity and then dismantled. The track bed can be raised in the process bringing it up and away to aid drainage as well as use the money in the long term for other projects which arguably will be more beneficial to the railway in the long term! Sorry for the essay hope it helps!

Have walked this route many times with my dog, from Perowne Way in Sandown along the old railway track through Alverstone, Newchurch, Merstone, Blackwater, and Shide into the Car park at Matalan in Newport one of my favourite walks even in middle of winter, great video enjoyed seeing what it was like when in use

I remember riding the line from Newport to Cowes and Ryde as a child, and seeing the rescued stock after it was gathered at Havestreet in 1971. Its wonderful to see the line restored to such a high standard with so much of its original rolling stock.

I can remember several trips on the Ryde Tram. It sounded noisier and jolted over the pier rail joints. The ride looks much smoother now. Congratulations on the marvellous rebuild!

A well produced and informative film about these rare and beautifully restored coaches. I can remember seeing one of the coaches with its thatched roof at Newtown in the 1960s. Wonderful to see the high quality of the restoration.

This is honestly incredible to see. I spend so much time wondering up and down the disused lines on the Isle of Wight just thinking about what it all must have looked like back then. I'd see photos, but history is a living thing, and films go a long way to show this.

My maternal grandfather, and his father before him, actually worked on the Isle of Wight railway. When I was a child in the 1950s, the Ryde St John's goods yard was full of little black engines puffing back and forth. It was magical. If I won the European lottery, I should have the whole network restored as a tourist and transport feature.

I remember in the 60s going on the trams that run the length of Ryde pier to catch the PS Ryde paddle steamer to Portsmouth to go shopping with mum and dad, when I was a kid, and going dancing in the 70 as a teenager when the PS Ryde was was turned into a night club and called the Ryde Queen

Top marks to you, Sir! I've only had the pleasure of travelling on your railway once (back in 2018), but I quickly understood the grandeur of the coaches and instantly loved what I saw! Those 4 and 6 wheel coaches will be a true credit to British Railway Preservation, and an absolute delight to us modellers when produced in OO and other scales!
